  • As an interim measure, until the replacement parts are ready, Toyota will inform the owner(s) of the affected vehicles to stop using their vehicles, with the possibility that Toyota will buyback the vehicles.

Goddammit, one of the cons of owning an indestructible Corolla.

SQ3. Is there a fixed purchase price for the involved vehicles? (Normally, the purchase price of vehicles produced more than 20 years ago is very low.)
A: No. Pricing for the potential buybacks will be determined based on market value of the vehicle. Market value varies depending on the model, the vehicle's condition and other factors.

This isn't like Ford and the Focus recall ;)

Oh well, you can't always have everything.
I just already feel bad for the people who will be scammed by dealers forcing them to do an "urgent" oil change, air filter replacements or wiper fluid refills as a part of the recall.

      • I'm pretty sure Ford still maintain the Focus one wasn't a 'recall'. Simply a 'customer satisfaction scheme'.

I'm having my 2013 Focus in for the 6th clutch kit replacement. They had the nerve to suggested the extended warranty of the 'scheme' may be over as the 7 years has elapsed. I put that to rest pretty quickly.

        • Wow, I had customers who had their vehicles replaced after 5 or so. Nearly full refunds. Have you gone down that path?

          • @spackbace: I'm going to initiate a similar conversation when i take it in this week. It's been a nightmare. Ok car otherwise though, so it's a shame.

EDIT - Damn must learn to type faster 😀

While not affected personally, its good you linked the press release.

    Interesting this comment is repeated.

……with the possibility that Toyota will buyback the vehicles.

For a 20+ year old car?

      • Probably makes sense given cost to install these airbags

        • I think it's more for peace of mind. If a guest suddenly isn't confident in their car, then they have the option to offload it

          Stupid Takata :/

@spackbace: It would probably cost more to get the airbag in, get the car in, get the tech to remove and replace the airbag and then dispose of the old airbag than what the car is actually worth. Cheaper to buy the cars back and scrap them out for scrap metal value.

          • @spackbace: Maybe, it does make me feel good about having my last 3 cars as Toyota’s

  • I own a Starlet affected by the recall. I contacted Toyota 2 weeks ago and they were great at first. They towed the car and paid for 1 months rental of a new Yaris so I was not inconvenienced. I was told to sit tight and wait. Either they'll fix the car or buy it back with notice they said.

Fast forward to today, they demanded the rental be returned. They've written off the car and offered $1k for it.

Not a good deal in my opinion. The car was very cheap and reliable and I doubt I can get another like it. I feel like Toyota don't give a rat's about the inconvenience.

That's odd, I haven't heard anything about forced buybacks. I'd query Toyota HO or talk to the dealership DP

      • After I got the call from the dealer, I called Toyota. After some twoing and froing which included being hung up on and being told "to bring the car in", they just referred me back to the dealer anyway.

They are wording it as if it's an optional buy back but it's not. They advised the car is a write off and offered to tow it to my place.

I understand not their fault, it's Takarta but they should've done a buy back from the start. Why waste money on a tow and a rental car just to do a buy back…
