Recomendations for an Air Purifier

After an air purifier. Would a stage 4 HEPA filter type remove both pollen and bushfire smell/smoke?

Update: In the end have ordered an InovaAir. Owned and made in Australia. Company is 17years old. A few good options, but not available for at least 1-2weeks due to the unprecedented number of people wanting their purifiers. Although the Melbourne store indicated 4-5weeks, and website does actually say at least 4weeks. Still worth having even if we don't have it now for the smoke as we are all allergy sufferers and have been meaning to get an air purifier.

Melbourne store also advised that the Xiaomi Air purifier(assume the model 3) was a cheaper alternative. Even that is at least 1-2weeks away and doesn't have a carbon filter.

It should. A HEPA filter is supposed to filter 99.97% of air particles down to 0.3 microns. Carbon filter and ionisation tech get rid of the smells. But in my experience purifiers only work well in bedrooms with door closed. In large living rooms the smell could be gone but my particle counter would still detect high count.

  • Air purifiers seem to be pretty popular on Ozb, anyone can tell me the pros of them? I don't really have an issue with air quality or not that I know of anyway oO

I think they are good for allergy sufferers. I was thinking of getting one for that, but now that we also have this bushfire smoke was also wondering how effective they are for that. Also I think the retail machines are probably only ok for small rooms like a bedroom.

Ahh ok so mostly for allergy stuff. I am lucky we don't have smoke where I live in BNE (yet)

Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra are suffering from bushfire smokes.

I went into the office briefly today but left early as the smoke leaking into the building made me light-headed. I am currently hiding in my room with my air purifier blasting.

They do make a huge difference.

      (Participant sample size of 6).

      • What brand and model do you have? Most sold out in regular stores. Not looking forward to next week when I go back to work.

        • Mi Air Purifier 2, I think it was around $160 each. I bought a few after Victoria's Thunderstorm Asthma.

It's going to be hard getting one now, I would imagine the demand to be really high. Good luck.

Box fan with hepa filter taped to one end, the filter will show you which direction to mount it.

  • I'm a huge advocate after buying them when I lived in Singapore and there was regular haze from neighbouring countries. It made a material difference especially as we also have a pomeranian (dog). The air purifier helped remove the smell from the dog as well as the smoke/haze, and especially when combined with a nicely air conditioned room (an essential in Singapore) I found I could sleep much easier/better and felt much more well rested.

My parents have hayfever and they found the air purifier has also helped them with dealing with the pollen, and now that we're back in Sydney, having three air purifiers in our 2BR apartment meant that we didn't really get impacted by the smoke even though when we looked outside the sky/air/etc was yellow!

Whether they're worth the huge price premium being charged nowadays is another matter, but I've found having good air purifiers makes a huge difference for me personally. We use Philips and recently bought a Dyson, and these have been great. My parents have one of our old Philips ones which is going strong (AC4025) but they've also got a couple of Homedics ones which I think are so-so. Keep in mind you also need to replace filters/clean them regularly otherwise they look effectiveness especially if they suck up a lot of dust.

Also looking to buy one. However, wife only happy with Dyson so no choice (if anyone have good deal on Dyson, please let me know).
I think the Xiaomi Air Purifier 3 (cost-effective) - can buy from Ebay or Philips (good brand) - out of stock everywhere are among the good ones.

You want something with HEPA filter(class 13 or above https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HEPA) + active carbon (smell), which is good enough.
Maybe buy a machine that can measure as well just for more placebo effect.

You can also DIY something like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kH5APw_SLUU but of course, it will not good as the machine.

    • Will so some more research. Looks like one with the HEPA and carbon filter is the way to go. Have tried a specialist supplier. They are inundated at the moment, so could be months before we end up with a good one.

Might have a look at the Xiaomi. The replacement filters also need to be readily available and cost effective.

  • I got a Dyson hot n cold in Canberra, and did a good job cleaning the air inside of the house. But $$$$
Keeping in mind, there is no Air Purifier to buy in ACT and SA other than Dyson and few other shitty once.

You also need a HEPA and Active Carbon Filter

  • I have a Philips AC4372/70 that I got a few years ago. Works really good, especially for days like today in Melbourne.

I’m considering getting another smaller unit.
