Compensation for Jetstart Flight Cancellation

Hi Team members

My jetstar flight from Bali - Sydney was cancelled due to which I couldn't go to work for 2 days.

Could someone please advise me if I can claim for my work loss?

Jetstar is happy to pay for accommodation and $30 for daily expense but not my work loss. However, I lost 2 days pay from work which is around $400 and don't know how and from where to claim that.

(I did have travel insurance from Commbank for this trip)

What did Commbank say when you called?????????

I haven't called them yet but when I do a general research online, this is what i see "Flight cancellations
The most common misunderstanding is that all cancelled flights, for any reason are covered. But this is not the case.
For example, if your flight was cancelled due to a mechanical fault, overbooking, maintenance, repairs, rescheduling, service faults or the airline closing down then you are not covered. It is the airline’s responsibility to compensate, reimburse, or find an alternative flight for the traveller – not the insurer."

      • Call them then report back to us with any questions, although I sense a disableduser984932 coming in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…

        • Disabled users arent the product of poor or uninformed comments, its for being abusive to other members, and the OP hasnt done any of that yet.

@RockyRaccoon: In that case I should have become a disabled user years ago!

So you want to be paid for two days of work you didn't have to do?

    Lol.

I want to be paid for two days of work while sitting on the beach in Bali in a paid for hotel with free spending money.

  • I'd be surprised if you could claim this; unless you have a very unusual travel insurance policy. I was affected by the collapse of Air Berlin - lost more than $400 because of it. But I also had a really great trip and did some pretty cool stuff in those extra days. The reality is, as my colleague says, very few people's dying wish is that they spent more time in the office.

If the issue is that money is really tight at the moment, stay strong - often the tough times pass.

    • Thanks for the information Mark.

I had the worse time after the flight was cancelled as they did not arrange any hotel and all the hotels around were full. It was around 1:30am when they announced the cancellation and I checked in a room around 4:30pm which i had to check out at 12.

Therefore, I want to try my best to cover all losses caused by them and their stupidity.

      • Fair enough. My Berlin situation is not comparable. Jetstar is also pretty terrible with compensation (unlike Qantas who tend to give out 2000 Frequent Flyer points at the drop of a hat). Your travel insurance policy or credit card might have a daily reimbursement but this will be small.

Recognise this situation was not your fault and unavoidable. I did have Jetstar cancel a flight on me at 3am, which I stayed up until 6am trying to sort. These experiences definitely suck but can help you when you travel again (e.g. I now rarely try to deal with flight cancellations immediately; I also tend to value middle-of-the-day flights more).

      • All the hotels around in Bali was full??? Was there a natural disaster?

But no, I seldom hear of compensation for loss of employment as a result of cancellations. Not even travel insurance.

Unless you escalate the issue I think it's highly unlikely you would get much for that, think about the rest of the passengers wanting the same it would be significant losses every time a plane is cancelled, delayed, rescheduled.

And what exactly is the loss you suffered and how would you like to be compensated?

    • I'm pretty sure the OP clearly stated his loss was $400 and he would like it to be covered.

      • +2

How did OP lose 400 if they didn’t work?

        • he lost the opportunity to work which equated to $400 which is irrelevant if he did work it or not…

the same as if someone smashed into you walking and you were off for 4 years, you would be compensated the 4 years of lost wages, even though u never worked it

          • +1

@Donaldhump: A cancellation of service is not the same as someone smashing into op. The former may be caused by circumstances beyond the airlines control e.g fog, haze, bushfire, volcanic ash, etc. The latter could be negligence.

Btw. Why didn’t op book the next available flight with a different airline so that they could get back in time for work?

            • @whooah1979: not arguing that,
i'm just miffed by the statement "How did OP lose 400 if they didn’t work"

              makes no sense.

they lost 400 because they didnt work, because the ability to work was taken away from them

              • @Donaldhump: Op got home somehow.

Op, did Jetstar give you another flight or did you purchase another ticket?

            • @whooah1979: why didn't they book the next flight. why the hell do u think, it probably cost more than $400 or was full.

i know all about cancellations ive been flying planes for 30+ years

    Jetstart Flight

Never heard of them. Sounds like some upstart airline funded by newstart allowances. I'd avoid them in the future.

  • Wait… whats so unusual about the OP's request? TID covers for loss of income so nothing odd about what he's requesting. OP, read your PDS and see what you're able to claim.

I haven't called them yet but when I do a general research online,

This is the reason why the first comment used to be "what did XXX say when you called them?" (and is the first comment here). It's really not difficult to just call and ask, rather than come to a bargain forum and expect us to do the research.

  • Could someone please advise me if I can claim for my work loss?

Ummmm, what did these people say

I did have travel insurance from Commbank for this trip

  • was cancelled due

    Due to what?

    • a compensation claim by staff…. that was not covered by Jetstar either.

OP go for it complain to everyone, employ a Lawyer, or read the details of your specific policy. If you really wanted help you would have at least read this and posted the conditions here, so if you needed advice we could at least use that to help you.

But I guess no one here are going to search out or guess what conditions your policy has.

OP, some people would have paid for the next flight out even it it was via KL or Singapore etc.

This is because the loss to them whether family, work whatever was greater to them than staying in Bali for 2 days. ( Some might try and make insurance claims (for the new flight) but most these ppl would fly back anyways).

You made the decision to stay in Bali for 2 days ie. essentially letting Jetstar look after you …..because for you missing 2 days of work wasn’t worth getting back for.

I would have made the same choice as you… but not everyone is in the same position.

  • I think OP is doing very well with Jetstar.
Usually you get nothing with them
    Consider yourself LUCKY!

Not only that but OP is getting 2 more days of Holidays in Bali paid by Jetstar. Thats doesnt sound like a loss to me.

OP should understand the definition of a "loss"

Not returning to work immediately is not considered a loss as far as the airline goes and as far as most people go.
More likely most people dont feel like going back to work imediately after a holiday.
Everyone says thier holiday could have been longer.
And I fully agree. This is actually a PLUS for OP. How lucky!

And why should the airline be responsible for one cutting their travel plans so fine and returning to work immenently.
You should always build in buffers and contingencies when travelling.
Allow a day or 2 to recouperate or get over an illness before planning to go back to work.
And as the poster above said - its OPs decison to stay in Bali rather than catch the next flight home.

So dear OP perhaps you should take responsibility for your decisions.
