Skybus Axes Velocity Points from 31 Jan

Skybus Axes Velocity Points - 5 Jan

Skybus will no longer offer Virgin Australia Velocity points after 31 January, 2020. This is sad news for travellers in Melbourne and Gold Coast that can currently earn 100 Velocity points per one-way Skybus ticket, or 250 points for a round-trip ticket.

Skybus tickets are valid for 3 months. By purchasing before the end of January, you can still earn Velocity points if you’re planning to use this service between now and April 2020.

  • Seriously? First BP, now this … What's the point of having Velocity then … (Unfortunately I don't fly that often; most of my points came from online shopping, BP, Wilson Parking back when it was a Velocity partner …)

I've been following Virgin for years, ever since they first entered the market. They're in significant trouble. They first aimed at being a low-cost alternative to Qantas (and were rather successful at that), but they couldn't compete with Jetstar. They then decided to go after the same market as Qantas, but they just don't have the same infrastructure that Qantas does.

This is just another way for them to start cutting costs.

      • Let me fix that for you

They first aimed at being a low-cost alternative to Qantas, but they couldn't compete with Jetstar.

They then decided to go after the same market as Qantas, but they also couldn't compete with Qantas.

This I agree on. Its all over the shop. Trying to charge 'qantas' pricing and offering something between Qantas and Jetstar offering in my books.

The lounges are so crowded, food average.

        • The lounges are so crowded, food average.

That describes Qantas Club well. VA lounges are also crowded but I'll take their food over QC any day.

For me VA is disappointing in the air, not on the ground (except for check-in, which is often bad).

    Ive always wondered

Some points is better than nothing, but 100 points a trip, if you do 5 per year thats 500 points.
I certainly won't be missing them

    • 250 points round trip for me and at least 8 trips a year. I'll miss it =/

Skybus getting the axe in Melbourne once they get the railway line happening. $4.40 vs $18 one way. They better save every cent they can because they are going out of business soon.

With Velocity it is up the business (in this case Skybus) who doesn't see value in offering Velocity points.

Virgin's problem is that it is held back by share holders (Singapore, Etihad and Air NZ?) because they don't want to cannibalise their own business letting Virgin expand yet they don't want to code share because it would enrich the other shareholders. Is it any wonder why Singapore Air hasn't taken a stake in any other airline, Etihad losing billions and Air NZ had their near death experience with Ansett.

"Soon" as in there'll be a competing train within 6-12 months, or "soon" as in airport rail link Construction is set to begin in 2022 and will take up to nine years to complete 🤔

Just picking on words. Think you might be the only one who loves rip off Australia.

There is already door to door transfers in Melbourne for $20. So only a matter of time with their tickets being so high.

There is a decent service of train from Melbourne CBD to Broadmeadows then Bus to the airport.

Erm yeah … is that an unreasonable thing to happen on a text-based forum?

It's not like I made a whacky illogical claim based on something you didn't write. I mean what sort of person would do that?

Think you might be the only one who loves rip off Australia.

          Ooh, this is awkward.

          j/k 😄

Yeah it's ok and I've done it a number of times, though obviously not ideal. I'll look forward to the direct airport rail link - but that isn't happening this decade.
