What type of connection? Is your area NBN ready? If so, what connection type (FTTP, HFC, FTTN, FTTC, FW)? Without these details, it’s hard to say.

Happy with Aussie Broadband so far and with $20 off first 6 months.

cheapest will not be best, best will not be cheapest

Paying more doesn’t mean getting better

You won’t get cheapest and best. It’s likely one or the other. Reliability, speed, price. Pick 2. Provide details of your connection (ADSL/NBN and if so what type?). How much data per month?

If NBN your best providers are likely Superloop or Aussie Broadband.

There will be cheaper providers but they will not be as reliable or fast.

Because the service is supplied by NBN, the reliability side should (in theory) be equal for all providers - the difference I have found is in their customer service, e.g. tech support wait times, opening hours, quality of staff, onshore/offshore, phone support etc. For me that's the difference between a migraine and a half, and a day or two just having to tether my phone having confidence things will be resolved swiftly.

Speed and price definitely may vary, especially peak hour speeds where low cost providers cut corners by not purchasing enough bandwidth from NBN.

But each reseller still buys their own cvc allocation, so the providers one congestion can still be a significant factor

        • Yes - isn't that what I said?

low cost providers cut corners by not purchasing enough bandwidth from NBN

I was saying that service reliability (or lack thereof…) should be equivalent from provider to provider on the NBN network (assuming same connection type), not that speeds will be the same.

          • @pinchies: I count congestion and speed issues as 'service reliability', but sure..similar sentiment.

I put customer service and support well below actual contention ratios and bandwidth though.

  • Telstra HFC if you can get it.

  • The cheapest mobile Sim with like 100mbs or something.

  • Got burned by Buzz Telco. I’’ve learned my lesson about using the cheapest NBN provider

Cheapest is your own phone's hot-spot.
I use my phone to connect all my devices.
Once 5G is up and running, this tech will out perform any crappy NBN

Which is the cheapest mobile plan you are pointing at?

4G was supposed to replace wired broadband. That didn’t happen. The same will happen to 5G.

      • I think what will replace wired broadband is when wireless broadband becomes cheaper per data per month compared to a similar spec'd wired connection.

Sure if you got money to blow and want convenience, 4G or even 5G is fine for you…us poor folks kinda have to rely on old wired connections….

I only have about 40MB per month allowance on mobile plan that includes 4G - thankfully I don't use it much so it never gets used if at all….but it doesn't roll over if I do use some of it, so that I would get more the following months if I don't use them….otherwise I should be rolling in about a few GBs by now….

Six months ago I ditched a FTTN NBN50 account with iiNet because it was unreliable and the South African based support was beyond appalling.
I switched to Optus Wireless Broadband which operates on the 4G network, 250Gb for $60 per month. I stream premium Netflix and Stan services to my 4K TV daily and I have never exceeded 200Gb. Setup couldn't be simpler, just plug the supplied modem into power and aim it towards a window. Download speeds vary between 45Mbps and 90Mbps. Upload speed averages 10 Mbps. I couldn't be happier with the service. I can't comment on Optus support because I haven't needed it.

    • This is a good option if you can stay under the limit.

    • That only works if you don't care about ping times.

      • Ping times? Is 14ms considered OK?

    • How to use referral?

      • +1

You click on referral link here and a request will go to a random person for referral and they will send you details via PM: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/letsbemates.com.au

I think you need to activate your Private Messages for it. Yours aren't active yet.

You will be asked to use the referral during your sign up process. Please make sure that you don't complete the sign up before you came across the field where you would put referral details else you can't claim it.

        • Where and how can I activatey private message? Still not showing referral during my sign up process…
