Affordable Travel Destinations for a Couple with a Bub (under 1 Year)

Hi OZB People!

We are expecting a baby soon so just lookings for some affordable overseas destinations to travel to in between July to December with a few months (under 1 year) old baby. We would like to stay from 7 to 10 days on the trip. Destinations should be cheap, affordable and family/baby friendly. Also, If you could give us an idea about your experience and budget :-)

We will fly from Melbourne.
Ideally from May-Dec
Preferably overseas.

  • I assume you've got a car. Take the ferry and your car to Tasmania. World class scenery and bushwalking. Stay in Airbnbs. If you can get something for the baby to sleep in into your car, you should be all set. If you can wait until the end of peak season (school holidays) it should be a bit cheaper. Fire season should be over by then too.

    • Yes. Got a car. I heard tasmania isn't cheap and long distance car travel isn't a good thing with a baby?

Bushwalking with an infant doesn’t sound like a good idea.

  • Depends which state you're located.
Do you want to go international or local?
When are you planning to go?
I know you asked about budget but how much do you want to budget yourselves?

    • Sorry for missing so many details in the post.

We want to travel overseas probably from May onwards and as far as the budget is concern then should exceed 5k mark.

      • 7-10 days for $5k should be really achievable.
If you're confident enough to travel with a young bub and want to definitely go overseas, I would check out luxury escapes.
Luxuryescapes.com and choose a good resort.

If you're expecting soon I'd say don't plan a holiday now… Wait til you see how you both react after the baby is born. You may very well regret 7-10 days glued to each other and the baby ;)

    • Thats a very good advice. I am just gathering information at this stage.

    • Agree on this one

  • Staycation!

    • but we want to travel :)

  • Once baby comes, the last thing you'll think of is a holiday with baby. It won't be relaxing, or that picture perfect image you have in your head. Baby will likely not like the hotel cot, meaning co-sleeping, which means grumpy mum n dad from lack of sleep. Baby won't care about the sights. Baby won't want to join you in the hotel pool for very long, which means no just relaxing calmly in the pool for mum n dad.

Keep the money in a savings account, and plan for a 2 night stay at a hotel in your city and a grandparent to watch baby. Do this after baby can take a bottle.

    Trust me.

Sorry but this sounds like a terrible idea.
We’ve got a 4 month old at the moment and a trip to the local Westfield can be exhausting. Unless you’re planning on a holiday in which you do little sightseeing and literally do nothing but sit around your accomodation “relaxing” which won’t be happening because you have a baby.

Also, how would this be in the best interest of the baby?

    • Agree wholeheartedly

We've travelled with bub since she's 6m and the best thing we've done is to hire a nanny on our holidays. It cost $6.50/hr in bali and $12/hr in thailand.

We hardly let them out of our sight and watched her like a hawk on day1. She was so good with her so we were happy for them to go for a walk around the hotel grounds, a play at the kids club, leave them in the hotel room for a bit while we get takeway nearby etc. It was really nice to be able to chill by the pool, go for a massage, enjoy our meals, have a nice long shower, taking turns to sleep in and recharge.

Parenthood is hard work and everyone's experience is different. I recommend waiting till bub is a few months old so you know the routine before deciding if going on a holiday is something you still want to do and what kind of holiday you are after.

    Good Luck!
