Rental - Garage Roof Leak Damaged Furniture

I rented for 1.5 years
I had stored my furniture in the garage while looking to buy a house.
Every time there was heavy rain part of the garage roof would leak
from a dodgy DIY internal gutter flooding the floor with 15mm of water.
His insurance investigated but nothing was done about it.
We are now out of that house but had to throw all damaged furniture out.
I had made a video with the water gushing out the gutter and measured the water height.
But as most of the furniture was inaccessible I don't have photos of that damage.
Is there a way to seek compensation and also how do you value (old) furniture.

    Did you have contents/renters insurance?

    • No insurance

You knew it leaked every time it rained and you still kept your furniture in there?

The tenant had some cheap old furniture that they wanted to replace when moving out. A leaking roof is a perfect way to get the landlord to pay for a new set.

I'm Asian and I didn't even think about that! Haha

    • Easier said than done,
where else can you store furniture?
You paying rent for an area that includes the garage.

      • where else can you store furniture?

If I knew that there water was leaking in the garage, I definitely wouldn't be leaving something I wanted to keep in there while the issue was being sorted.

This. You left furniture in a leaky garage for 1.5 years, knew it got wet during rain and now want something down about it? You should have removed your furniture the second time it happened. Sure, it’s not really fair that you need to do so, but you weren’t lookin after your stuff properly.

You cannot prove water leakage from the garage damaged your furniture.

    • arrh, the 'ol 'correlation doesn't prove causation' argument?

  • My rental agreement made it very clear that garages are not waterproof and anything I chose to store in there was not their responsibility if it were to get damaged.

  • My agreement said nothing of the sort.

  • Isn't this what home content insurance is for?

I'm not sure a landlord is responsible for damages to the tenant's assets even if the main house starts to leak. (The landlord is required to have the leak repaired within a reasonable time of course.)
