Win10 Feature Update Failed - Suspect EFI Partition Size

Not sure if anyone here experiencing the same problem on updating Win10 from 1803 (ending support) to newer version.

It has failed 4 times on the same error code 0xc1900101, with every time rollback to 1803 when it failed to boot whilst prompting 'Boot system not found' after updating to new version.
Then it would go download the same thing and repeat the whole same thing again.

From what i gather, the error code points towards insufficient size on EFI system partition which is currently 300mb.

Anyone has the same problem and got it fixed by upsizing EFI partition ?
What's the right way of resizing EFI partition ?

TIA! and Happy New Year 2020.

Do you really need to update your Win10? We run an eight year old workstation which we have an updated since we set it up.

      For security updates ?

We keep the AV and firewalls up-to-date.

yeah that's not really good enough…

          • @knk: Not good enough for what?

The workstation is old but it can still its job.

Btw. It is closer to 10 years old.

            • @whooah1979: Your PC is vulnerable no matter what AV/firewall you use

They don't protect you from software vulnerabilities

    • Is this workstation connected to the internet ? If its standalone then you have nothing to worry about, however most people want to have the latest security features.

  • The latest version of W10 is 1909, released in November.

Micro$oft suggest that you only need a 100 MB EFI partition so that may not be the problem.

Have you tried disabling your AV? Sometimes helps.

You could also try downloading W10 to a flash drive and trying to install from that.

    IT Guy here.

My diagnostic method? There is none.

It's not worth my time to diagnose weird things like this.

I just load my Windows image to the computer, update and be done with it.

In your case just reinstall Windows from scratch, apply all updates and be done with it. Not worth the headache of working out exactly why this is happening in my opinion.

I've updated about ~1000 in the last few months to Windows 10 and the errors they spit out are really vague with a lot of different solutions. I've had this error and similar with PCs that have had their HDD cloned to an SSD and the partition sizes were screwed up.

In my experience it has either been the EFI partition as you say or the system reserved that does not have enough storage. I personally use a bootable Gparted USB to resize the partitions.

    • Thanks champ! Will give that a go.

  • There are actually upgrade logs left on your computer telling you why it exactly failed.
There is a hidden folder $bt something in the root of C:\
Look for setuperr.log (for all errors during the upgrade) and scanresult.xml (for compatibility issues with the win10 version you are upgrading to)
