  • any reason why would you pay yearly subscription for this then paying one off to Pocket Weather? tell me the difference.

    • +6

Pocket weather will shut down today.

      • Both iOS and Android, or just iOS?

    • Pocket weather dies today. They turn off the server Dec 31. Just use the BOM app.

      • omg didn't know, was it on newspaper front page

        • Been discussed on whirlpool for months

          • @MS Paint: this is very sad, like losing an old friend for good

            • @UncleCheapSteam: you didnt pay much attention to your old friend, considering that every daily forecast in Pocket Weather said it was closing today.

Weather data is expensive unfortunately, so the subscription model lets us maintain a sustainable business model which we hope is good for both us and the users.

But saying that, understand subscriptions aren’t for everyone and so that’s why we also have a free version but with some features disabled and is limited to your current location.

Check out Weatherzone and the official BOM app. They're both great and provide for this data.

      • +1

Official BOM app does the same. For free.

  • +4

The official free BOM Weather app serves me well. Has anyone here used this paid service I honestly don't see something that would warrant me to commit to a subscription

    • The BOM app does not provide the granularity that you can get from the BOM paid services. If you want high granularity my recommendation would be fishranger.com.au. Not associated, just familiar with the data and services available.

  • +2

What can we get with this paid subscription that isn't free with many other apps?

    • -3

Subscription provides Radar, Detailed Forecast Data, High Frequency Updates and Multiple Locations.

But the base free version is ad free and provides the same accurate info limited to your current location.

      • +5

All provided for by WeatherZone and the Official BOM App. This is not a deal and doesn't belong on OzBargain.

        • So true. Is this app iOS only? Aus Weather Australia (android) pulls data from BOM as well and is free

  • Haven't used this app, but fishranger.com.au has the highest granularity BOM data available with a free tier and has iOS and Android apps

  • Pay to use BOM data and it being a subscription. Ummm pass. Just use the BOM app.

    • It's like paying gst on already heavily taxed petrol.

I use weatherzone that is free and uses the BOM data.

WillyWeather is a good app that’s free or once off $6 to remove ads. I use it to get Apple Watch complication with BoM temps and rain..

    • use this as well - great APP

  • Shame about Pocket Weather.
iOS BOM app if anyone needs the link

isnt the BOM app just the same and free?

    • no. these other apps use the BOM data but with better granularity than the BOM app, plus better UI/features/customisation

  • +1

I went to the BOM mobile site, entered my location and then saved as a mobile icon on my home screen. Free on Android. It mightn't be as detailed, but fun for 99% of people probably.

    • But there is an BOM weather app. You don't need to save the website as an icon? Unless website provides additional info and I've been missing out on additional features

  • +3

All the same features provided by WeatherZone and the Official BOM App. This is not a deal and doesn't belong on OzBargain.

    • They’re completely separate weather apps aren’t associated with Weather Perfect at all.

      • both have the similar features and free. You need highlight what's premium features Weather Perfect provides while the two mentioned does not.

      • +1

I'm not saying you haven't made a good app, but it doesn't belong on OzBargain. It isn't a deal and this is therefore merely advertising for your app.

  • I never thought someone would pay 15 bucks, or even 7.5, for a weather app.

    • The weather data is unfortunately expensive, so the subscription is to hopefully ensure the product is sustainable over time. But take the feedback onboard and will continue to look at ways to bring the cost down over time. The app does has an ad free tier as well, the subscription ads a few extra features such as radar and the ability to change locations.

its per year mate, makes it even worse

  • Any plans for an Android version? I'm going to need something to replace Pocket Weather 😭

  • +1

Just bookmark this https://weather.bom.gov.au/ and add it to your iOS home screen. It’s a nicer interface.

    • -1

This surprisingly looks quite a bit nicer than most of the apps out there

  • Yeah nah.

  • I actually grabbed this for $7.50 to replace PocketWeather because as an iOS developer myself I value a clean UI and nice experience. I really like the app but I do agree it’s a bit expensive. I also prefer one off fees for apps.

For those recommending the BOM app, the interface isn’t even updated for iPhone X style devices which is quite crazy. The BOM website is a lot nicer if you’d like to go official. WillyWeather seems to be the other better alternative if you’re looking.

Thanks! Glad to hear you like it. Yeah the clean UI / experience is the goal, and have lots planned for updates. But hear you on the pricing, it's currently tied to our data costs but will continue to look at ways to bring that cost down over time.
