As you might already know, BIG W Auburn is closing down. I'm sorry I forgot to take a pic while I was there, but there is an article backing me up.

So, as far as I could see, about a quarter of the store is already empty, and other things are on clearance. As far as I remember, it was 20% off all things storewide, 30% off Corelle dinnerware, and a big clearance near the DVD section.

P.S. If someone does happen to go in there, please do snap a photo 😀.

P.P.S. Excludes gift cards, no lay-bys available.

      The suburb of Auburn in NSW.

      • -3

        It's a shame they don't close down the whole suburb.

    • AUBURN 2144!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • The demographic of Auburn has changed a lot in the last 30 years.

        I was shocked when I went there 6 months ago and found about half the signs in the shops (excluding inside the mall) were in Arabic….

        • -3

          Yes we are taking over Australia and will be installing an Islamic Republic regime with sharia law as soon as we can.

          • +3

            @alz: Mate as long as you guys open up more charcoal shish kebab stores I'd be down with that.

            • @Munki: Would you like hummus, tabouli with it brother?

          • +1

            @alz: Will we get sharia banks as well? No interest loans ftw!

        • I was shocked when I went there 6 months ago and found about half the signs in the shops (excluding inside the mall) were in Arabic….

          What shocked you about that?

        • I worked there 30 years ago and it was like that then. Nothing new about it mate.

          • @snook: Sorry snook but that is BS.

            There certainly was an Arabic element, but there wasn't a giant mosque on every corner and the majority of signage wasn't Arabic….

            I guess it's like one of the growing number of Arabic equivalents to what Cabramatta is to the Vietnamese….

            • +1

              @aussietivoman: ‘Giant mosque on every corner’

              Hyperbole much?

              That would be shocking if it was true.

              It seems you are viewing Auburn through a distorted lens.

              Aussie in your name is code. We get it. Sadly.

        I'd say that Amazon would've played a big part

        • +1

          lol, Big W has been in trouble longer than Amazon.au has even existed.

        • After they destroyed Dick Smith and Masters.

      • I think it was in the news not too long ago > https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-08-29/woolworths-to-close-s…

      • +8

        "The Big W department store chain lost $85 million despite a pick up in sales."

        "Woolworth chief executive Brad Banducci said he was not satisfied with the rate at which increased sales had translated into profits and the store closures would "accelerate the path to profitability"."

        "Aussie households are being squeezed by weak wages growth, shrinking savings and tighter credit."

        As a sidenote;
        - they have a lot of offerings mirrored in Woolworths, so why bother going to them;
        - their baseline prices on a lot of items are not better than Target, which is theoretically in a higher demographic;
        - because of lousy wages growth, people have become used to taking advantage of sales OR if they do convience shopping they would go to Kmart which have a strong range at lower prices;
        - they have missed the boat on doing a direct trading relationship with suppliers like Kmart have, which have slashed prices, and continue to use middlemen which raise prices;
        - they were slow to adopt click and collect;
        - their website is not great to use;

        • +3

          Seeing in few big w, many of their staffs are unreliable (lazy or bludger sound harsh) when customers need help.

      • Because they are stuck in the 1980's.

      • Most stores I've seen are nearly empty. The city ones do all right, smaller towns not so much.

        Just this week I picked up a 55 inch 4K smart tv for $200.

        • -6

          You call it a bargain, others call it landfill.

          • @Maverick-au: Who are these others? Would like to know why they throw electronic waste into a landfill

        • +1

          Where? I too would like a $200 TV.

    • I am happy with my $220 chromebook. But whenever I do visit a Big W store, I don't think I ever leave thinking "wow that was a great place to shop".

      Why would they apply the discount online when this is a store closing down and they want to clear stock?

    • +2

      You have been on the site a year and havent posted a single bargain either!

  • +3

    Any videogames left?

    • +1

      There are lots available but even with 20% its not really worth ozbargain

  • Don’t forget that’s 20% off even on top of current advertised specials. I bought up on PS4 and Xbox games last closing down sale.

  • +3

    Not much of a bargain since most stock would be moved to another store.

    Most of the closures of the stores are in specific areas, at least in NSW

    • Fairfield
    • Auburn
    • Chullora

    I think Liverpool too… can anyone guess the correlation of these stores and the suburb and demographics?

    Anyways I think if the closure of these stores help keep BIGW alive then I'm all for it, it's hard to compete with so many department stores, I mean kmart eats away its own sister company Target. I think BIGW could probably exist on the basis of rural areas and also a few stores in the major city parts to stay relevant, but stay out of suburbs.

    • I think Liverpool too…

      Liverpool isn't closing. The sign at Fairfield NSW says to go to Liverpool Big W (and Wetherill Park and Bonnyrigg) after the 31st of January.

      I wonder if they'll bring Target back (Big W took over the old Target space when Target moved to Wetherill Park), but really, the shopping centre is so bad with a lot of empty shopfronts; they should just demolish it and start anew.

      Source: Was at Fairfield yesterday

      • +1

        Start anew with residential apartments you mean? That’s the only things that seems to get built in this country these days. Is there really that much of a population growth to sustain it?

        • Did I say residential apartments? No.

          There definitely aren't enough shops to sustain a shopping centre the size of Neeta City. Plus, the car park is probably the worst in the council area and that's saying something as Cabramatta is in the same council area …

          • @kerfuffle: I love getting a monthly mindfck driving in the Neeta City car park and having to drive on the right lane.

        • Population influx from you know where

      • +1

        Neeta City, Fairfield was recently acquired by overseas investors during early 2019.

        While no planning proposals have yet been lodged, the site has been earmarked by Fairfield Council for potential mixed-use rezoning, increased building heights to about 18 storeys and a higher floor-space ratio in its recent urban design study.

        Source

        • Guess it's turning into apartments, with a shopping centre underneath …

          From your article:

          86 retail tenancies are fully leased

          Hahahaha keep dreaming …

          • +1

            @kerfuffle: I was thinking the same thing, when I first read the article…

            The annual net income is estimated to be more than $7 million when the 86 retail tenancies are fully leased.

            I guess they didn't do their research..

            ENN’s CEO, Glenn Willis, said: “Following our recent acquisition of the Waverley Gardens shopping centre in Melbourne, we are pleased to have secured this high investment quality Sydney metropolitan shopping centre for our capital partners.

      • Read another list before that said Liverpool was eventually earmarked for it, plans could probably change.

    • +1

      On the demographics thing, I did note in Auburn on my last visit that most shops excluding inside the shopping mall (which Big W is in) have signs in Arabic, not English.

      Perhaps Big W at these locations should follow that trend…

      • That's not so much a bad idea at all. Coles, in certain areas actually have more local foods and stock more according to the majority demographic. It probably would be a good idea that they stocked stuff that target that.

        But to be honest I was more specifying demographics in terms of how trashed up these stores. Everytime I've visited them, things are missing, when I ask for and item it's "hmm my system says 10, but none is available" or products opened and played with then stuffed on another shelf. It's entirely a crap areas to put stores in, I would wager they went by profits and how much write off inventory that had to be made for them to close these down.

  • Managed to get a switch lite for 231

  • When exactly is the close down date?

    • It’s in the OP … Last day of trading is on the 31st

  • +1

    50% off storewide now.

  • Yes 50% off now a Big W Chullora.

    Plenty of PS4 games left I saw sealed in the cabinet.
    Many XB1 and PS4 titles on the shelf.

    No one has touched the DVD movies.

    Almost nothing Nintendo Switch, was some 3ds games left.

    There was a number of Starlink starter packs at $5, did not get one.

    Got a copy of Red Dead Redemption II XB1 for $19.50.
