So I'm looking to buy some strips (with controller) to just use as a backlight for my desk and monitor. Theres so many options out there but I think i'd like to keep it simple and not go for 'smart' enabled strips. I've also heard that most of the ones you find on Ebay and Amazon are pretty much similar (don't know about that).
So i'd just like some advice on some products that would suit my needs. I think i need around 5m so please help this clueless fella out

I have both smart (Yeelight) and non-smart (ebay). Ebay one is definitely much cheaper however the Yeelight can be found at fairly reasonable prices too. Only downside is that you’ll probably need more extension strips for the Yeelight.
I’d go with the ebay ones if I were you considering they’re fairly inexpensive. They both function well except that the Yeelight has better control/features due to the app, whereas you’re restricted to the remote for the eBay one. You can always add on a smart module in the future if you want.
For what you want I'd just buy one of the cheaper <$30 packs on ebay, they come with a remote and a power adapter and can do RGB. It's what I did years ago for the exact same purchase (mine was $24.99 and it was 5 meters but back in 2012). I really don't think it's worth spending near $100 for it when something much cheaper does the exact same thing. Plus if you need to add extra strips its really easy, my one came with a 'connector' strip.
The only downside I had was that eventually (can't remember the time frame) the adhesive started to slip up but this was more to do with the weight of the adapter because I have a gold fish brain and didn't think about that beforehand.

I bought the same one and the adhesive does wear out. But a quick fix is using a glue gun or a staple gun to hold the strip in place and it works like a charm!
Spend the money and get these, they’re awesome.
