Kogan 10W Cool & Warm White Smart Bulb (E27) - 2 Pack $17 Delivered @ Kogan

BOXITUP

Hi all,

Similar to previous postings on Kogan bulbs, I believe this may be the cheapest these have come down to at 2 for $17 ($8.50 per bulb). I think these have been 4 for 49 or 59 in the past, but at this price I'm giving them a go!

These can be used with Google assistant, Alexa, and I've read that if you use another app (smart life), you can link them up with IFTTT.

Don't forget to use the BOXITUP coupon code at checkout to get the final price!

Copy pasted blurb below:

FYI - these appear to be rebranded Tuya light bulbs. They're a Chinese company and their smart platform is used a lot to make cheap Wi-Fi smart home products (Mirabella also uses Tuya for their bulbs). Their smart platform is also known to be quite insecure.

You used to be able to flash a custom firmware onto these bulbs so that they only communicate locally on your Wi-Fi network, but newer bulbs have been patched and can't be flashed easily anymore. I'd be careful about buying Tuya devices, and would opt for something that works without relying on "the cloud".

Thanks for the info! Have you had experience with flashing the firmware? Can they still be used with IFTTT/Google/Alexa etc??

I've flashed a couple custom firmwares onto my Mirabella Genio bulbs. I tried using Tasmota at first. It's the easiest to flash (just a one size fits all image), and while it does work using the Web UI for each bulb, I simply couldn't get it to work with Home Assistant. This is the guide I followed, you may have better luck.

What I ended up settling on was ESPHome. It needs more work to get up and running - you actually have to build the firmware yourself using a custom configuration, which sounds daunting, but a bit of searching will find you some pre-written configurations (there don't seem to be any for Kogan bulbs, however). Setting them up in Home Assistant is incredibly easy, it just takes a few clicks and you're golden.

If you can find a Tuya bulb that's flashable, then good stuff, but I worry that the reason why there's no pre-made configuration for these Kogan bulbs is because they aren't flashable. They may be patched devices, or even worse, might be using a new Realtek chip instead of the standard ESP8266 chip (the former being supported much less than the latter).

Thanks for the heads up, will see what my options are when they arrive.

  • Where do you put the coupon in the Kogan website? Am I missing something?

    • There should be a space for coupons when you're viewing the cart (near end of page).

      • Thanks. I think Kogan only shows coupon spaces for items that allow coupons.

I had the 4 pack in cart but no space for coupon code, but worked on for this 2 pack
