I've tried it with the 250GB and that works.
Saimone confirms it works with a 512GB.
I tried checking the Sandisk compatibility table, but the table no longer displays Samsung Note information for versions 7 onwards.

The maximums can be ignored IME. I've never heard of a device where you couldn't use a card because of size.
I got a HP tablet years ago and it wouldn't take more than 32, while in my phone I had a 128. So limits do exist.
Each device has a table to handle data locations.
The size of the table restricts what is the maximum size data card that the device can handle.
The manufacturer usually gives a maximum size based on a combination of "what is the size of our address table" (I'm making up names because it's been too long since I studied this) and what are the largest existing data cards that they can test their device on.
So Samsung says 256GB max, probably because they only has 256GB microSD cards to test on (as Spackbace found)
however there was an excellent chance that larger cards would work (per Diji1 and thanks to saimone :) )
Yeah, and hidden in my reply is me agreeing with Diji1 ;)
I see the claim the OS can handle 2TB

Many thanks Saimone :)
