Buying a Fairly Powerful Laptop

Hello folks,

I am looking for a new laptop for my wife. She is pretty much going to use it for office work and the rest for browsing, Youtube etc.

Weight would not be an issue but as I am into photography and video editing but not gaming. I would want the laptop to be able to handle at least HD video editing.

Came across the MSI GL65 and Asus TUF FX505 deals in OZB. I think the GL65 is still on a deal through ebay.

If you folks have any other suggestions under the 1k mark, please let me know.

Cheers!

Is it for your wife or for you?

HD video editing (I assume up to 1080p and not over?) of what exactly?

  • It is for my wife but it would be handy if the laptop could handle basic editing as I do my 4k editing on a Ryzen workhorse. .

But if the laptop can handle HD stuff it should be okay.

  • Just stick to what you currently use for editing, and get her something for her, something light with good battery life.

Gaming/editing laptop = generally heavier, thicker, worse battery life

I don't think she'd be too pleased if you buy it for her and you keep 'borrowing' it, but that's just me.

    • Fair enough and for starters I hate to use laptop for editing.

E595/495 comes to my mind but are there any others you suggest around the 1000$ mark ?

Don't buy a laptop with a 'U' processor (Intel or AMD), as it's using the ultra-low power (voltage & performance) variant of their CPU's, if you're intending to use it with productivity apps.

They're low-power which is great for battery life, can be built in to smaller chassis (lighter so + for mobility), but will also heat up quicker when under load, throttle CPU, and get noisy.

I suggest looking for a quad-core (hyper-threaded) CPU, FHD LCD, 16GB of RAM, and at least a 500GB SSD (NVMe preferable).

With the recent / current crop of Intel chips, you should be looking for a system with H Mobile processor.

Something like below with an additional 8GB module you can buy & add yourself later (look to have very good cooling design as per photo):

$999.00 (Use eCoupon:LASTCHANCE Ships in 2 business days*)

        8th Gen Intel Core i5-8300H (4Cores / 8Threads, 2.3 / 4.0GHz, 8MB)
        15.6" FHD (1920x1080) IPS 250nits Anti-glare, 60Hz
        NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 4GB GDDR5
        1x 8GB DIMM DDR4-2666
        512GB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe
        Backlit keyboard

Warranty upgrade isn't too bad either:
        3Y Depot/CCI upgrade from 1Y Depot/CCI delivery for $159.50

        • Thanks for the detailed explanation. Really appreciate it!

If you're going to do photo and video editing you'd want something with a good display which tend to be quite expensive.
