Switch Pro Controller stick drift?

Recently my launch day pro controller has developed a seemingly unfixable downward "drift" on the left stick. I will reiterate that this is the PRO controller, and not the joy-con as I'm aware of the issues with the later, but am yet to experience them.

I've tried taking the controller apart and blasting the stick with compressed air and conducting calibrations again and again, but nothing has fixed it.

Does anyone know of a solution to this issue? Or at the very least a reasonably priced, quality replacement? I've had my eye on the 8bitdo sn30 Pro+, but it's selling at $75 on Amazon whereas the pro controller is sitting at $89.

  • If this is a widespread issue like the joycon one, you can have it replaced by Nintendo. I just got my Joycons replaced outside warranty.
They might deny warranty in your particular case since you took the controller apart. Wouldn't hurt to try though.

    • This is the one thing I've been trying not to resort to. Nintendo have been good previously for things that have fallen under warranty, but their blunt customer service approach (no phone numbers or customer service email addresses) really puts me off going through the process of filling out a form just to have them assess the controller and take a ridiculously large amount of money to fix the controller that could have gone towards a replacement.

      • Yeah it sucks. It is 20-25$ for an appraisal if they deem the defect not to be a manufacturing issue. It is up to you to have it fixed or returned at that point.

      • What you're describing is illegal under the joke legislation known as Australian Consumer Law.

        • Could you elaborate on that?

  • I have had this issue, and I had the controller replaced by Nintendo.

    • How old was your controller and did they charge?

      • My controller was less than a year old, and they replaced it at no charge. But it is still worth contacting them to see if they will change it, even if your’s is out of warranty.

  • Nintendo are generally pretty good with warranty replacements. I've been lucky enough not to have any issues, but I've had family/friends who've had their Switch replaced for overheating and Joycon replaced for the drift issue.

That said, you're right that Nintendo are not very "customer friendly" in the way they conduct their warranty and service, but that's how the Japanese are - lots of paperwork, inefficiencies and this sort of stuff. Don't expect an Apple store like experience.

In terms of replacements, if you just want to get a new controller, I'd say the Pro controller is still the best bet. I've had various 8bitdo controllers and whilst they're good, they're no equals.
