Have You Bought or Sold Heritage Automobile Number Plates or Other Number Plates?

I noticed that new Victorian heritage number plates cost $12,000 for 6 digits.

I can understand if you were keen on a number plate you might pay some money to obtain it but would you pay $12,000 just for a number plate? Or how much would you be willing to pay?

I know there are some sites that sell number plates and Shannon's auctions also sell them so I'm wondering if they are treated and traded like investments and if they go up in value?

On topic the number plate: OZBARG is available if you're keen.

    High Yield Investment

    • Please tell me more.

  • Bought, because in WA we can have up to 9 characters for about $695 (I think mine was $595 when I bought). Finished off the look of the car

Plates aren't on a vehicle now (I don't own one) but I still own them. One day

    • If you are as creative as me (if I had personalised plates), no doubt itโ€™s just spsckbace, as mine would be tomsco.

      • Lol nah was more generic than that

I paid a one-off $600 for my custom plates. In Victoria, you pay it once and that's it.

I wouldn't get it in NSW or any other state where there's an annual fee ($400/year?) though. The fee gets added to the annual registration fee and I personally think that's just too much for what it is.

It used to be in NSW that if you ordered plates in a combination of letters and numbers that matched the standard format it was a once off fee of around $180. Eg could get OZB49N in black on white wth no annual fee. Now there is an annual fee for every custom combination so there are a lot less personalised plates. I think these standard format combinations are around $150 annually. Special format, not matching the standard format are a lot more.

I did get personalised plates for $180ish once. Now there is an annual fee, not a chance.

      • You're right. Those formatted combinations were a pretty good go-between standard issue plates and full custom letters. I had one previously when I was living in Sydney and paid the once-off $180 too. Someone obviously decided it would be good way to make more money!

Victoria got rid of the annual fee years ago.
Now however they charge you like $180 every time you put your custom plates on a new vehicle.

    • Wow an annual fee along with the already high price tag? That's ridiculous and perfect money grubbing. Love it.

  • I'm undecided on custom plates even at $500 and it's not so much about the cost its more about what it says about the person.

Clearly if you're really into cars and you get a plate that symbolises your car that I can appreciate but if it's something like ILOVEU or your name - I'm not so sure.

I recall a guy I new whose girl friend Vanessa got him something like LUVNES. Talk about being owned ๐Ÿ˜‚.

The heritage plates are just numbers so $12k seems excessive.

And no, I wouldn't pay $100K for ILOVEU in case you are trying to off load them.
