  • Genuine question, isn't 4k a bit overkill?

    • +2

Why? What is the point of a dashcam?

So why wouldn't you want more pixels?

      • Generally in cameras, increeased pixel density = worse nighttime performance.

        • To a point but this is a dashcam not a regular camera and has a different use. During the day more pixels means more chance of capturing number plate. At night headlights etc are on and if it's a parking accident it will be low speed so the plate can be captured.

    • It may be. Actually, I was looking at another F800Pro from Supercheap for my partner's car. However, I saw this for a little extra and thought why not.

More pixels, easier licence plate recognition. However, larger file sizes so less is stored. A higher capacity micro SD card will solve this issue.

  • Apart from 4K, is this better than the Blackvue? I missed the $419 deal with bonus PMP last month and really regret it.

    • It has more features including remote access. I have two F770's and they have held up well in the heat and one saved us an insurance excess on a hit and run when parked.

I think I'll get one of these to add to my car.

I have the Thinkware F800Pro and have no issues. The night vision is superior in the Thinkware due to the Sony Sensor used. Pretty sure the U1000 shares the same sensor.

BlackVue does have longer warranty, but I've heard issues with SD cards and overheating.

      Not sure if that helps.

  • Any Brisbane OzB guys know how much it costs to get it installed and a good place to do so..

    Any help appreciated.

    • Not sure if the price differs from state to state, but Autobarn installs front and rear for around $200. Takes the hassle out of it and it's a clean install from past experience.

      • Thanks Mate.
Should be Oz wide for Autobarn.

  • Got mine from AliExpress with Rear Camera for 165$ it is 4K if only front cam is used.
    Happy so far.

  • I will need research more tomorrow morning but for those that already are familiar with Thinkware, do you know if they have something similar to the Blackvue Power Magic Pro hardwire kit and battery packs?

Any experience on Thinkware's Cloud feature vs Blackvue?

    Thanks all and Merry Xmas!

EDIT: Quick skim of features answers one of my questions "UK4D32 includes HWC hard wire kit which enables Advanced Park Mode feature and allows for a professional installation into 12V and 24V vehicles"

Yeah, pretty much the same thing. Thinkware dash cams have a built-in voltage meter. It is designed for the dash cam to automatically power off in the event voltage level is lower than the configured value for more than 5 mins to prevent car battery drainage. This should be enabled in the app when you use the HWC. The Blackvue PMP enables this feature and acts as the HWC. Same stuff, just more things for us to spend money on.

The U1000 has limited cloud features like Live View, Geo-fencing, Impact detection and GPS. The Blackvue seems to have more features and if you are willing to pay a fee per month, it becomes more useful. Check out this link https://www.blackvue.com/blackvue-over-the-cloud/

TBH, the Cloud features for both brands are a bit gimmicky. I can see it being great but it needs a constant internet connection to function correctly, i.e. phone or portable hotspot. I hardly use the cloud features and almost forget the dash cam is there until I want to pull some footage.

Anyways, good luck with your choice. Autobarn seems to have great prices on either right now. Merry Christmas!

  • Unfortunately no stock around Sydney it seems. Have rung a few stores and none seem to have it.

    • After doing some more research seems like this model has a few issues. I'm getting the DR750S instead.
