Such a great camera for the price…. especially if you are more into stills than video. I love my EOS RP. Image quality is fantastic

    • +1

Looks really good on paper. Is AF quite fast? This vs Sony A7 III. May be not apple to apple :p

      • +4

With the latest v1.4 firmware update, the AF is great. Check out the many Youtube vids on the subject. Face and eye detection works very well. I also use the X-T3 which is no slouch in the AF department and the Canon is superior IMO. I can't comment against the Sony but I've owned a lot of cameras and the EOS RP doesn't disappoint when it comes to AF performance.

        • +2

I agree with this. I owned MFT, Nikon and Canon APS-C bodies prior. A FF is a massive step up. Couple with an RF 35mm (it goes on 20% off on eBay from time to time), and you've got a really good value entry level FF setup.

        • +1

If I was to get this, I’ll be sticking with my EOS EF lenses. Any thoughts on using the adapter? Poorer image quality?

          • -1

@Ameowzon: The adaptor does nothing more than act as a spacer - has no effect at all on image quality.

          • @Ameowzon: The adapter works well. And it should. It's all within the Canon ecosystem, it'd be massively dumb of them not to make sure the compatibility is spot on. I bought a cheap EF 28-105mm USM Mark I from eBay and it works flawlessly. One of those vintage gems if you know what you're looking out for.

You guys are drinking the kool-aid. Image quality is inferior even to micro four thirds. By over a full stop! The reason it's so cheap is because it's comprised of bargain bin components from a decade ago. It's a relic of a bygone era.

An RX100 1-inch sensor compact point & shoot camera has a more capable sensor at base ISO.

      • Oh no - dynamic range is the only thing that matters in image quality!! Can't push my shadows 6 stops!!!

        Get a clue 🙄

        Epic lols!!

$999 at Camerahouse if you don't need the adapter.

    • +1

      $999 is after Canon's $100 cash back

    • +2

$999 at Camerahouse after cashback + $9.95 delivery. Amazon has the body only at $1098 with free shipping, so $998 after cashback saving you $1 on the camera and $9.95 on shipping :)

  • +2

Woah this is so cheap. Got it for 1599 at jb 3 month ago when rrp was 1999.

  • "Canon is also offering $100 cashback for "EOS RP body only" so I'm not sure if the kit with the EF adapter counts or not"

Can anyone confirm if this qualifies for the $100 cashback?

    • Curious too

    • It did when I bought it at jb. Amazon is on their authorized dealer list.

    • -3

Yes it still applies with the adaptor.

      • Just confirming that the $100 cashback works on the link with the body and adaptor? If I can get the body and the adaptor plus the $100 cashback, I'd pull the trigger on this one :)

        • -1

          Yes, it applies.

      • Again, which idiot is negging me (and Frozensage above) for factually correct information?

The $100 cashback applies whether you purchase the camera body alone, or with the EF lens adaptor bundled in with it.

Whoever is negging this - presumably because they somehow disagree with this despite it being correct - needs to pull their head out of their ass.

  • I have a canon 550d (ef mount) with a few lenses from canon and tamron. Will this camera with the included adapter work with my current lenses? I know its a noob question but just to make it clear before I pull the trigger.

    • 550d may have an EF mount but because it is an APSC sensor, your lenses may be EF-S. Which means they were made for APSC sized sensors instead. You can still mount them using the adapter, but the RP will recognise them as EF-S and crop the image significantly. To the point where the image resolution may be even worse off than on your 550d.

Better to check what lenses you have first

      • I have a 18-135 ( which I guess is a efs) a 50mm f1.8 (both canon). I also have a tamron 70-200 f2.8 g2. I mainly use the tamron and other lenses are not very expensive ones either. As long as I can keep using my tamron, i should be happy..

        • +5

The 18-135 is an EF-S lens, so you'll only get a 10MP image from the centre crop of the RP sensor when using it. The other two will work properly, using the full area of the RP sensor.

But yes, all three lenses will mount and work with the RP.

@dm01: What idiot negged me for this? Evidently someone clueless.

              Merry Christmas

        • If it's a Tamron Di, it was made for full frame. It it's a Tamron Di II, then it's for APSC and you will get a crop.

Your 50mm F1.8 will work fine since it's an EF.

18-136 is likely to be an EFS kit lens.

      • I too am in the same boat, have the exact same camera with a
        cheap nifty 50
        70-300mm f4-5.6 IS II
        EF 17-40mm f4 USM

not too concerned about the 50mm, do you think i will get full use/compatibility out of the other 2 lenses?

        • All three of those lenses are full-frame lenses so will work great on the RP or R bodies with an adaptor, utilising the full area of the image sensor.

The price cuts on this camera have turned it from unexciting to a solid deal, especially for those who already have a bit of EF glass or are willing to get some second hand for cheap. Lots of great options there.

If I was buying into a new system right now I would also strongly consider Fuji, with comparable image quality and a much more fleshed-out and compact range of native lenses, almost all of which are excellent.

Either one would be a good choice.

    • +2

The Fujis are great, no doubt, but you're still paying a premium for a smaller sensor.

      • -1

Meh, sensor size isn't as important as many make it out to be imo. The Xtrans-4 sensor's ISO performance is very similar to the RP (less than a stop between them to my eyes), resolution is the same, fast glass still gives plenty of scope for subject isolation on aps-c. Then consider the size and weight benefits of glass made for a smaller sensor…

        • Meh, size and weight isn't as important as many make it out to be…

Like anything, it comes down to what's important to you. APS-C can provide some benefits, full-frame obviously has others. But $1000 for a full-frame sensor - even one as "bad" as Canon's 26MP - plus access to Canon's range of lenses, colour science, and five year warranty, is a pretty compelling offer.

Those APS-C size and weight benefits would wanna be pretty important to you…

It's a different story, however, if you're wanting to shoot a lot of video.
