What Are OzBargain's Choices for Various Whitegoods?

You know sometimes you get those surveys where they ask who influences your buying decisions and whether you influence others?
For me the Ozbargain community is probably the biggest influence on what I buy, from whom, and when.
I not only consider the community here good at finding a bargain, but collectively very knowledgeable on the best products in a variety of categories - so I can be confident that something I buy on a recommendation from this site will do the job, and do it well.
So, since I have a few things I will be looking for in the Boxing Day sales I wondered if I could provide some suggestions and people might be interested in giving some guidance to those of us who will be buying?
What is the Ozbargain product of choice for such things as:

  • Dishwasher
Bosch 6 series has seemed pretty popular
The LG XD3A15NS is highly rated by Choice and around the same price

  • Washing Machine
Bosch and Miele seem to be generally liked by the Ozbargain community

  • Fridge
Hard to get a read on any clear favourites.

  • Any others?

Dishwasher: my own hands, because I find the brand of hands my partner uses doesn’t clean them as well.

Wash machine: whatever is decent value. I had a $200 Aldi one which shit itself after 10 long years of service. I now have a haier 3 years, no probs. A friend had a very expensive brand that sheet itself after a week.

Fridge: Westinghouse. Never failed me. Mum’s still works fine 20 years later.

I would recommend a Fisher & Paykel fridge, had mine for 25+ years now and it’s still working great.

  • Bosch Series 8 Dishwasher, Dryer, Washing Machine.
Not so white: Miele vacum cleaner along with Roborok.

Washing machine: Fisher & Paykel, we've had ours for almost 20 years, still going strong. Also runs rather quietly, aside from the spin cycle on a large load.

    Love the comments above.

20 year old plus fridges/washing machines - still working.

Yes they are otherwise you would have a new one. Btw I would also be happy as they are for such service but….

    Further comments

They use an hell of a lot more power
They were made in Australia - most are now made in China, even Fisher and Paykel, Westinghouse (I have both here now FP washer Westinghouse Fridge, and marked made in China)
They cost twice as much as a fridge today. So value wise if they last 10 years vs the 20 years above your are at least even
Newer features vs 20 year old features. My Chinese F&P top loader washer uses up to half the water my old F&P top loader did, because it senses load sizes far better.

"what is the ozbargainers choice" - Really OP you are falling for the dumb posts that declare x product is the ozbargainers "choice" - we have different choices based on life experiences. French fridges arent the choice for the student in a one bedroom flat. Uber doesnt suit the ozbargain farmer in Tuncurry if you get the picture. Hell we still argue over iPhone/androids for phone use.

OP get a 3 months choice subscription. While not 100% it does give you better tests than random Ozbargainers experiences.

Not putting down ozbargainers, but limited experinces give you limited data to work on.

    Merry Christmas all 🎄

    • Some very good points, none of which had crossed my mind.

Actually found myself agreeing with all of the above.

You can't really make an informed decision on the current models of a certain brand based on the performance/reliability of something you bought 20 years ago. Most of these brands have undergone restructuring/cost cutting/ownership changes/rebranding/etc./etc. over the years and in most cases are just a shadow of what they used to be back in the day.

For example Fisher and Paykel, which is mentioned multiple times above as a tried and tested brand is owned by Haier since 2012. Yes it is the same bargain basement chinese brand Haier that owns the Holden of white goods F&P which used to be a hallmark of Aussie/Kiwi manufacturing ingenuity and pride. Nothing wrong with Haier as they are the largest white goods manufacturer in China with billions of dollars going into R&D but my point is F&P is not the same any more. They are just another mass produced brand originating (most probably designed and engineered) in China. Same goes with Westinghouse and the list goes on and on, Sharp, Sanyo, Sansui, Pioneer, Aiwa to name a few.

Personally I would buy a Korean such as LG or Samsung at the price point of F&P or Westinghouse or fork out for Bosh or a Miele. I'm not implying these are better either as they too have turned out total sh**boxes sometimes but at least are not trying to make a buck based on marketing of the former glory of a certain brand.

    • That's interesting, just today at Christmas lunch my mother in law was telling me they got a Haier dishwasher to replace their F&P because "F&P own it, it's just their cheaper version". Methinks she was mixed up.

    • Even Bosch is made in India and China.

Only very few Germany made Bosch product are available.

I am moving to a new home soon. I was looking buy washing machine and fridge. Initially I was after Hisensefridge because they were on very good price for sale. But then I saw some mixed review for the product and I though that I should go for better brand like Bosch, Electrolux, LG or Samsung. However, no what brand I look into people still had similar issues even with their product and same poor customer service. I have people seen recommending xyz brand because their old one lasted for 10-20 years. I am afraid that is no longer the case because everything is now made in china and apparently they have cut corner a lot to keep price down hence low quality.

Is it really worth spending more for premium brands? I was thinking to buy second hand Australian made Westinghouse or Electrolux.
