Deep fried meat is a part of Japanese food culture. And as the majority of Japan is Hindu/buddhist, and Sanders looks like Santa, they make a killing on Christmas and it is now traditional christmas food.
Actually, the Japanese have a very strong tradition of celebrating Christmas with eating KFC, ever since the 1970's.
