  • Where dem edifier speakers?

  • Price: $309.25 + $142.78 Delivery
    International product from outside Australia

I am interested in S3000Pro too, see what happens in boxing day..

    • My bad, I forgot to mention prime in the title, thanks mods!

  • I have a set of these as my rear speakers - Love ELAC speakers they rock.

  • This is really tempting. Are they that good?
I currently have the Logitech 5.1 system, and can I replace the existing speakers with these?

    • Are you Logitech powered or passive

      • powered

        • +1

          You have 3 choices:
          1. Get a 5.1 (or more channel) receiver and build up your speakers (could try and use your current logitech ones as surrounds and centre).
          2. Try and use these speakers in your logitech setup in place of the 2 fronts. Be aware that your logitech amplifier may not deliver enough power to drive these, and may even get damaged over time trying to drive them. I don't have the specs of your logitech receiver, and don't have the power specs for these speakers in front of me but these speakers are 6 ohm so they may present too low of an impedance to your logitech amplifier, which may burn out the amplifier. You need to know what is the lowest speaker impedance that your amplifier can handle.
          3. Start building up a 5 or 5.1 system from scratch and don't use any of your current logitech speakers or amps.

What's the frequency response of your logitech system? These speakers go down below 50Hz, and may produce better bass than your current setup. Also, a good quality stereo setup may be better than a lesser 5.1 setup. AV receivers are not the best at stereo, but they may still be great in comparison to a lesser 5.1 . Therefore it's possible to build up from stereo to stereo with centre to 5 speakers, etc (can add a sub at any time). If your logitech sub doesn't go lower than the speakers then there is little point in trying to use it.

          • @g1: My Logitech 5.1 model number is Z5500, bought in 2011.
            The input impedance is 8,000ohms
            The frequency response is 33Hz - 20kHz.
The current front Logitech speakers are 2 x 61W.

If the above setup is not suitable to have this set of speakers, what amplifier will be great for this pair of speakers?

            • @he88388: I had a look at http://static.highspeedbackbone.net/pdf/Logitech_Z-5500_Spea…
I think the impedance is actually 8 Ohms.
Looking at those specifications I think you could see how the ELAC go as fronts. The amp should be able to drive them, and won't output too much power for the ELACs.

With 10% THD (total harmonic distortion) output from logitech amplifier you may not get the best out of the ELACs. THD of the amplifier can be hidden behind speakers that lack clarity. When you put better speakers in, the sound may be heard as noisy because it actually is but the poorer speakers were hiding it.

If you are seriously interested in getting better quality audio experience then get a pair of these and see how you find the upgrade. It may be a good step up, but if you hear distortion then I would think the logitech amp needs to be replaced. Hopefully that 10% THD won't make a big impact.

In terms of amplifier upgrades, it depends on your budget. A good amplifier under $1000 (around $800 on sale) is Sony STR-DN1080. It can take on amps twice it's price. If you are looking for cheaper then keep an eye out on bargains on Ozbargain and look at reviews. I would recommend staying away from anything that is reviewed as sounding harsh. These speakers will most likely carry that through. I had a look at a review for these speakers that stated that as the amplifiers improved the speakers had better sound, which is good as it shows that the speakers scale well and produce an accurate representation. Some speakers will sound a particular way and any improvement in amplifier will make no difference to sound, which is only good if you like how those speakers sound, otherwise those speakers are restrictive.

If you don't plan on using the amp with a home theatre setup then you could look at older amplifiers that don't have 4K, etc but you would get great sound. For example if this is being used for a computer and the video goes to the monitor while the sound goes to the amplifier.

A good setup does make a huge difference. It's like listening to the world with ear plugs in or without them.

  • I bought a pair of these last time tbey were offered by Amazon for about this price. I was very impressed and wanted another pair but they had gone back up in price. They sound punchy and clear and slightly better than the other bookshelf speakers I own in this price range with silk dome tweeters and 5"+ woofers like Dali and Tannoy.

  • How would these compare to the new cheaper volls?

    • There’s not much info out on the new volls, they look very much like they’re debut clones. It’s hard to say how they’d sound though, I believe voll and amazon have pretty painless returns?

  • Yeah, might try the volls. They're 5" which should help me Schuler i have no sub.

Been looking around gumtree but hard to find anything even used at the volls price point
