Travel Insurance for Drone (Theft?)

I'm travelling to Bali on the 27th and was wanting to take my Mavic 2 with me. I've got TDI "the works" travel insurance. However I can see that 'most items' will pay out $700.00 if stolen, exception being video camera's up to $4k. My argument is that a drone is a video camera, but no doubt the insurance company will reject that in the event it gets stolen.

I've got DJI refresh in case I crash it, so I'm not worried about that. Has anybody had any luck with some form of insurance in case of theft of their drone while travelling?

You may be able to get it covered as a specified portable valuable under your home and contents insurnace. SGIC (SGIO in WA and NRMA on East Coast) use to offer worldwide cover for objects thats you specified and paid a extra premium for.

    • Yep this is what I did. SGIO count drones as sporting equipment. I made the same argument that I was bringing it on holiday as a camera but no go.

    • great idea, i'll check out what I can do through my policy. thanks

  • My argument is that a drone is a video camera,

We have a video camera. Do we need a RePL to use it?

    • Don't need a RePL to fly a drone.

Also you can nominate extra items for coverage in your travel insurance for an extra premium

  • If the PDS doesn’t specify drones (as some do), why don’t you call the insurer you want to go with and ask them to clarify in writing what category it is in, and therefore what limit you’ll be able to claim back.

    • yep will be doing that this morning. was a 2am thought and figured the powers of ozbargain may know through their own experience.

You can call it whatever you like, but its a drone, not a video camera. Yes a drone has a video camera on it, but so does your mobile phone and you wouldn't claim that as a video camera.

the insurance company will reject that in the event it gets stolen.

No they'll pay out up to the max the policy allows under personal effects, which is $700. You also need to read the section of why they won't pay etc, basically if its left unaccompanied or unsupervised, they won't pay. They won't pay full stop for a camera left in a car even if locked in the boot, and you'll need a police report that shows damage or forced entry in a car for example for items locked in a boot to be covered (non camera items of course).

Why don't you contact TDI and ask them what coverage your drone will have under your current policy and if you can have it listed on your policy extra coverage?

If you're thinking trying on insurance fruad for a new drone, then the rules around theft and travel insurance have really tighten up in recent years from people claiming way too many 'claims' to get new phones, cameras etc. Hence why the $700 limit per item etc.

believe it or not, there are still honest people in the world. shock, right?

I'm trying to cover myself in case somebody decides to steal my bag with what would be the equivalent of half a years wage there. thanks for your helpful input.

Some but not many though. Its a world of 'not my fault' and trying to scam a freebie.

        Your post screams planning ;)

Well thats silly spending half a years wage on a drone. Wouldn't it be great if it got stolen and you could get paid all that money back, and on return, you find your drone again!

        • are you capable of reading properly? your post reads 'incompetence'.

i said half a years wage over there, not for me. stop your trolling and go find another thread where you can be annoying.

  • just an update for anyone that comes across this thread in search, travel insurance direct (TID) do not cover drones for theft. no option to add extra coverage for it either. they don't consider them video cameras as they are not designed to be carried or worn.

  • CGU cover worldwide.
I believe there is a maximum number or days / dollar per item could be $2500
Cover drones as per the pds under definition of one of the exclusion being: "motor vehicles, caravans, trailers or aircraft other than model or toy aircraft"
    Hope this helps.
