The reviews of the S8 worry me a little…

    • +11

meh, works like it did in 2017

    • Since the Pie update it's been a little slow. If it comes with Oreo then maybe stick with it for performance?

    • I'm not sure what is worrying based on the info. I can say I own two s8 and have had no worries.

All 3 amazon reviews are terrible so fair warning bargainers. Out of 3, one was a Europe model and the other was second hand/damaged. The other just says its no good. It would be a good deal if you got what was advertised but with those reviews I wouldn't touch it even with someone else's money. Hence the warning lol.

    • +7

Seller is amazon au so those reviews likely relate to a different seller. Even if they arent amazon will step up if something is awry.

    • +3

The problem with Amazon reviews is that reviews for items bought from different sellers get lumped together. It is possible that in the past, there was another seller selling overseas phones as local. Both the S8 and S9 at the moment are sold and shipped by Amazon AU rather than a third party seller, so I would be quite certain that you'll get what's advertised.

    • The post specifies SM-G950FZKAXSA from the start, which is pretty specific..

    • Brand new stock of s8?? lol nah unless they found a random stack behind boxes just before xmas it's probably a refurb.

      • I bought a new S7 just over a year ago from OfficeWorks. It was new and genuine AU stock from them. If people are wary of Amazon why not check out if OfficeWorks has them? So long as a code is not used OfficeWorks price match and give a further 5% off on also. I recently bought a 10e on that basis. By the way the S7 works completely fine; my son just needed an upgrade from the S5 (wanted a bigger memory) which also still works fine so my mother now has that. We keep out mobiles in flip cases so they look new and have never had any faults. My old S3/4 I gifted to a friend in a new case. It looked so good it was stolen though, so I cannot comment if it still works well …

Has anyone ever found that the internal storage (64gb) just isn't enough, and wishes they'd gone with the 256gb alternative? If so, what are you doing with the phone that makes 64gb inadequate for your purposes?
(asking as I'm trying to decide between the two)
    Thanks in advance.

    • +4

Photos and video shot with the phone could fill that - just pop in a micro SD card though and you're all good.

I type this now on an s8 with a 256gb card in it. Decent enough phone and still serving me well but it's hard to recommend something this age - if nothing else, software updates will be lacking.

Ive had the 64gb for the past 2 years… I just backup my photos with Google photos and every now and then the app asks me if I want to remove the backed up ones from my phone.

Recording 4k video or screenrecording mobile games will eat through it fast.

Also editing videos, images or just running allot of activity like apps will generate huge amounts of junk file rather quickly.

      • +1

It is not a 4k video camera in most situations because it has no image stabilisation in that mode. So really a 1440p video camera. Also it has omnidirectional audio. meaning if you are in an enviroment where the sound is all around you but you want to hear the person infront of camera, you prob won't hear them. I know they fixed the mic problem in s10, but maybe they did in s9

I had the 64gb S8 (just sold it yesterday) and never had to delete anything off it. I moved to 64gb pixel 4 and will just move photos to computer when it becomes an issue and will still have access to everything through Google photos.

Was considering the A50 for my parents or should I go with the S8?
What’s the main diff as I’m a iPhone user

    • +2

I would go with the A50.
Pros of the A50: much bigger battery, newer phone gets more update support, bigger screen.
Cons of the A50: No waterproof, plastic body (might be a pro for a lot of people)

      • Ok thank you

    • -1

      S8 > A50 but A70 > S78

      • I'll take a non fullscreen phone over a full screen any day

  • There are a few decent looking phones around right now for a similar budget, does anyone have any thoughts on Samsung S9 vs Samsung A70 vs LG V40?

    • +2

LG V40 has more camera, but stock camera app is mediocre. LG V40 has Quad DAC if music is your thing.

Samsung A70 can be $100 cheaper on sale, but the rest of the hardware is mediocre compare to both V40 and S9. It's newer so it got more update than both though, and if the screen aesthetic is what you're after it looks newer.

      • Nice, thanks

The only issue with these older Samsung flagships is battery life.

    Samsung Galaxy A20, A30, A50, A51 all have 4000MA Batteries and the A70, A71 and A90 come with 4500MA Batteries.

I think the A71 looks like the best buy at the moment :)

I would take it over a Galaxy S8 or S9 if someone offered me a FREE phone

    • I wonder if Samsung tries to slow A series on purpose to push flagship. Wouldn't surprise if they tweaked the software as their own product is smashing their top of line range in terms of value and usability.

You know like the VW software and emissions something similar could be done for phones.

      • Apple was found to have done the same thing. Slowing phone performance to save battery life without telling the consumer, best excuse they could come up with at the time!

        • +1

Lol, my S2 100% battery dies in minutes after a 5 minute call. So I guess I'd take a performance hit.

          • +1

@PvsNP: Wouldn't you just change the battery in the S2? The back cover pops right off.

            • @eug: Cheaper to buy a new phone then change the battery on a S2 :)

            • @eug: I did, but that ended up being the same in 3 months.

              • @PvsNP: Oh, I've had that problem with cheap batteries. Gotta look for a good one which can be a challenge sometimes.

          • +1

            @PvsNP: Lol, I'm still using my S2.

    • i hear that. likewise id take a bugatti chiron if someone gave it to me

  • I got a a20 it's temporary as my s5 has died on me and this was on offer with discount but when I have spare funds might grab s10 when price is right but these s8 and s9 seem a good upgrade or not? Both wife and I both have the s5 mine obviously not working and wife one is starting to have issues.
Are these at a good price compared to others who sell them? Or best hang in for better price on s10 and regarding the a series phones I believe they are not as good as the s series phones?

    • You could wait for a s10 or even s11, I think it's about time they have a major revision for the s11. But if your mobile isn't usable then you don't have the choice to wait.

I upgraded my work mobile from a s5 to a s8 on release due to the s5 not meeting my running demands/issues, it has been performing well for me up to this point in both battery and speed. I may even continue to hold onto it past the s11 release as it's been doing a lot better than my s5 considering I've used for as long as I did for my s5. Also the s8 has still been receiving regular monthly updates inline with the newer s9 & 10.

I prefer the flagship s series, I've been using Qi wireless charging since Nokia introduced it in their Lumia line.

      • dont they go major revision every 2 cycles, s6 edge and s7 similar , s8 and s9 .. now s10 and s11? Don't think they will have moved past hole punch tech for s11.

        • Good point, there were rumours and I'm always hoping there'll be a surprise.

Probably the most we can hope for is an almost invisible pin hole front facing camera.

@jeworge: Yeah, I wonder how did our grandparents survive not only without a notch, but didn't even have mobile phones. Nowadays, notch is such a big deal which decides whether someone will buy or not buy a phone.
