LADDA Battery Charger $15 (Was $25), 4x AA 1000mAh or 4x AAA 500mAh for $5 @ IKEA

620

A good battery charger for those recent Eneloop deals. Charges up to four batteries, managing each charge independently.

Also discounted are some of the LADDA batteries:
4x AA 1000mAh for $5 (was $8): https://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/20303874/
4x AAA 500mAh for $5 (was $7): https://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/30303883/

Unfortunately the higher capacity LADDA batteries that are equivalent to Eneloop Pro are not discounted.

    Ladda AA 1000mAh.
    'Normal' eneloop AA 1900mAh.
Pity the high capacity eneloops aren't on sale too…

    • There’s 2450 Ladda also in a four pack for $14.95, they just aren’t discounted.

Lol. I know, hence my comment - pity they aren't on sale too!

      • For moment, I thought the normal 2450 Ladda are for $5 then realized it is 1000mAh.

    • Yea too bad, need the high capacity

fwiw, the 12 slot charger is also discounted by $10 as well, down to $39
Has a LED. Not sure if it's any better than the fancier chargers from overseas.

    • Here are some reviews of the Ikea STORHÖGEN battery charger on Youtube, Online review and Ozbargain discussion.

better than the fancier chargers from overseas

depends on if it's dumb charger.
most fancier ones are smart chargers, and can charge different battery types much quicker. i've got Opus, nitecore, Liitokala. they are all good. some of them can even test the batteries…

    • +1

Don't get the Storhogen. Although it can charge up to 12 batteries, the charge current per channel is so low, that the batteries are unlikely to ever exhibit the dV/dT effect. Without that effect, the charger won't know when to stop charging.

A good charger has dV/dT charge termination AND charges the batteries in 2-4 hours. 2-4 hours is the best charge duration, if you go shorter then the batteries can overheat. Longer and the batteries won't exhibit the dV/dT effect. There is one exception to this rule that I know of: the Nitecore D2 and D4 chargers "time share" the batteries between the charging channels, so they will correctly terminate the battery after 7-9 hours charging, using dV/dT.

The LADDA charger is a good charger, but its "display" (a single multi-colour lamp) is limiting. A better charger has one lamp per battery slot, or even better, an LCD display with numbers. If you are charging four flat batteries and one says "charged" within five minutes, you know that battery is faulty. With the LADDA charger, you won't have that indication, unless you charge only one battery at a time, and monitor the charging process.

      • Anyone have any thoughts/comments on the Aldi Activ Energy charger?

        • Not sure which charger you mean. Is it the one in this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/194234/amp

If it's that one, it's a good basic charger. Perhaps the only inexpensive charger that can charge d-cell batteries. Aldi change the design slightly every year or so. Display is limiting, it only has bargraphs to indicate how close the batteries are to full charge. I found that it will charge any battery I put into it, even old batteries that have gone high-impedance, which some chargers refuse to charge.

Price-wise, it's good, about $20 from memory. It is very simple to use, no settings, just put the batteries in. But if you are a technical person, wait for an Lii-500 deal, for about $10 extra you'll get a much more versatile charger.

I picked one up yesterday at IKEA Springvale and it was discounted to $10!

    • +1

I second this. Also confirming that Springvale IKEA is $10 for the LADDA Battery Charger. Plenty of stock available.

  • +2

I have one and I don't rate it.
Maybe I got a dodgy one but after a month it stopped charging the batteries and blinks red.
Upgraded to a smart charger and I'm back in action.

I wouldn’t bother with that IKEA battery charger even for $15. For $29 you can get something like a Nitecore D4 which is 10x better - https://charger.nitecore.com/product/d4

    • +1

Agree. I am using the Nitecore charger regularly to charge both the LADDA 2450mAh and Eneloop 1900mAh AA batteries. People should spend a bit more to get this better battery charger.

One funny thing I have noted is my Eneloop batteries are holding the voltage higher than the LADDA.

    • Where would you find the nitecore D4 for $29? My searches only show it being roughly $39. Do you think they'll go on sale christmas/boxing day?

  • I have lacrose charger. If the battery's charge is too low, the unit wont charge the battery. It will indicate Null.
I need a dump charger to give it a kick before lacrose can detect it. Upon reading the manual, apparently it is by design.

    • I’ve got the same unit and you can actually “jump start” the dead battery by bridging the positive terminal with a paper clip or flat metal object that spans over to a healthy battery that accepts a charge. Once the dead battery starts showing a voltage you can remove the paper clip and the charger will start charging.

    • This is the odd case where having both a D4 and Lii-500 has worked out ok for me.
I use the Lii-500 a lot more (I bought D4 earlier then read about the Lii-500 test modes), but there is the odd time where I have a battery which drops below the voltage threshold so the Lii-500 ignores it. But the D4 detects it and charges it up fine.

A dumb charger (not that I had one) would probably work too in bringing up the voltage first.

Genuine question, what people need batteries for nowadays?

    • +3

Same thing they've always been used for, to power stuff. Eg kids toys, lamp and torches, camera flashes and intervalometre, Xbox controller and remotes etc etc.

      • Thanks, lots of negs but it was definitely an honest question because,

        Kids toys,
        No kids

        Lamp and torches
The ones I’ve got recharge by USB

        Camera flashes
Never had an external camera flash

        Intervalometre
        No idea what that is

        Xbox controller
        PS4 here

        Remotes
Yes that’s the only reason I use them for

        Clocks
        Really? Noise things

        Vibrating fleshlight
Now I might understand why such demand for recharging batteries here ( the 6 downvotes explain it all - those 6 need lots )

    • +3

Clocks, cameras, camera flash, flashlights, kid's toys, remote controls (for TV and stereo).

I'd like to get smoke alarms that take AA batteries too, so I don't have to keep buying 9V batteries for them.

The charger unfortunately is not good.. I got one to charge Ladda, they seem to be flat fairly quickly. Apparently the charger is not fully charging the batteries
