Did an ad-hoc job but wasn't paid. What options do I have if he doesn't want to pay?

Good evening all,

Last Friday (14/12/19), I chanced upon an airtasker job which the employer left me his number outside of the platform for private dealing. After completing that job, he gave the option of either paying by cash (wait for an hour) or paying through bank transfer (claiming to be immediate). Me and another tasker opted for bank transfer because we believed that he would pay.

However, up till today (22/12/19), we have not received the money despite multiple reminders. He claims that the bank is still processing our payment but cannot produce receipts even though we prompted him multiple times to do so. We have come to the conclusion that he doesn't intend to transfer the money to us and is trying to take advantage of us.

Currently, I have the following information on him:
1. Phone number
2. One of his customer's living address (the place we did the job at)
3. Name

Because we decided to proceed with this deal outside of airtasker, I am not sure if there would be any complications if I decide to pursue it. What can I do to get my rightful pay if he actually doesn't intend to pay up?

Would really appreciate any helpful comments!

  • Phone him and ask for an expedited Bank payment (at his expense) otherwise, phone 13 13 94.

Have you got anything in writing, the scope of the job, who will do it, where, when etc…

Maybe get a screenshot of the advt.

Da fuq did I just read???

    • The art of the deal he calls it.

Kind of like the China trade deal that took a year to do and is exactly the same as before negotiations began or the North Korea negotiations that have seen Trump withdraw forces from the DMZ in exchange for nothing

Well, you could take it up with Airtas…. oh. nvm…

And I do a bit of selling on Facebook and scumtree and if people have not set up their Osko payment or PayID then the payments still take 3~4 business days.

But, a week or more? This guy is just taking the piss. Depends on what sort of work you did for them, but you could start with sending them a letter of demand and a copy of the invoice.

  • When you first accepted the job on AirTasker, it was priced for $X?
And then you had a private dealing plus another $Y?
Maybe you can first chase for the $X via AirTasker.

Hope you have raelised by now that trying to short-circuit the system is not rewarding.

  • By going outside of Airtasker you've taken on the risk of payment.

In your naivety you've done a cash job for no cash (why you'd agree to a bank transfer has me blowed). In theory, no government department can help you as (I assume) you didn't intend to pay tax on that income, so you haven't paid for that service.

It's up to you to retrieve the goods or service that you rendered as it's still legally your property or convince the client that it's in their interest to pay the money.

  • The legal route would be a letter of demand and then possibly VCAT (or the equivalent in your state). You may need to do some digging to work out his full details.

Otherwise use the information you have on him to make his life uncomfortable. Constant contact at all hours of the day. Go the Facebook route etc. What he has done could be considered deception and probably not the first time.

I don't like your chances either way, it depends how much it means to you.

  • Why the hell did you do the job outside of the platform, instead of wearing the fee you now have $0, good luck getting paid your only recourse is a tribunal and you will probably have to pay a application fee on top

the employer left me his number outside of the platform for private dealing.

A cheater tries to cheat the system and got scammed. Instant karma.
