  • Which providers have you spoken to/researched so far?

    • I used to have Energy Australia. But they good for 12 month commitment.

none, they want someone else to do the work

        Exactly

  • Dunno how this compares to whats available in VIC but try https://energyswitch.service.nsw.gov.au/

    • Thanks

  • Prices are not the same for every location.

Enter your postcode into that and make sure to select "Yes" for personal estimate. Enter your last bill details into that (usage + start and end date). Make sure the bill is one with actual usage, not an estimate or instalment. Make sure to take into account your usage patterns for the winter months (usually more heating, hot water, etc) vs summer months (air conditioning, refrigerator working harder, etc) vs autumn/spring months (usually lower since the climate is more moderate).

Make sure to open every plan that interests you in a new tab, scroll down and double check the maths yourself (Energy Made Easy only rounds to the nearest $10). Take into account any discounts offered and whether they are for usage only or for both usage and daily supply charge.

If you have a Cashrewards account, make sure to check if your chosen retailer has a cashback deal. It's $70 for energy and $40 for gas. You can take that into account in your maths as a discount if you don't mind the 3 month wait.

If you're in Victoria or NSW, there are state government websites to automatically do all the work for you, however I have had different results from Energy Made Easy at times and found Energy Made Easy + taking the time to manually double check the maths to be the most reliable way of doing things.

If you do decide to use these sites, make sure the text in the PDF can be highlighted (i.e. it's not a picture/scan of your bill).

Most meters are read every 3 months, so the best time to compare plans is 1-2 weeks before your next meter read. Most energy retailers will list the last read date on their internet portal. If you decide to switch just after a meter read, you could potentially have to wait 3 months. Some retailers may offer you a "special/off cycle read" to switch faster. Some may absorb the cost themselves, others may pass it onto you as a fee.

    • Thanks a lot. This is very helpful.

  • Be careful about a connection and disconnection fee.

    • Good to know. I'll make a note of it.

  • You could potentially not do anything and wait for a bill to arrive then work it out. Between moving out and the next people moving in they might not disconnect the power or gas. Sure, it might not be quite legit, but getting into and out of a bill cycle is a bit of a headache.
