Are Hard Suitcases Repairable in General?

in general can you fix hard shell/side/whatever suitcases? or are they made disposable like most other things?

and what specifically is and isn't repairable?
wheels?
trolley handle?
zips?

very specifically i have one where the zip has come away from the shell
(thanks to a tight-a$$ who packed too much into it and forced the zipper shut instead of paying for extra baggage - which would have been cheaper than buying a new suitcase if that's what i have to do now.)

i have visions of it on that monster conveyor-belt system at dubai airport, unravelling, and all my things cascading down the layers like a pinball machine

Bring some duct tape on your travels.

I’ve had wheel and trolley handles repaired (replaced) by Samsonite repair agents before. I’m a fairly heavy duty work traveller and recently I’ve been getting case failure (as in cracking of the shell) which I think is terminal.

    • will samsonite replace the case when that happens?

    • also did you get those repairs for free?

  • Depends how much the case was in the first place…

  • I've had zippers and wheels repaired on a hardside case, both under warranty.

Take the case into a luggage repair centre for assessment and then you can ascertain whether a repair is worth the expense vs cost of a new case.

    • well now i know they exist so thank you
but they are all the way in the city
i suppose i could make the person who broke it take it in there…

lol - you should & they should pay up for the repair or a new case!

I’ve had zippers cut and manually patched it up with a sewing kit whilst on holidays.

I’ve seen heaps of hard Cases snap off on a corner wheel however the nylon interior shell still holds contents. It’s just inconvenient.

I would personally not spent over $100 on luggage’s cases as they usually need to get replaced after maybe 3-4 trips

    • i could try and sew it myself. i was also considering some kind of glue.

good to know the insides manage if the outside breaks

i do wonder if the more expensive ones last longer or are more repairable when they come with warranties.
jason101 mentioned his samsonites getting repaired
