EXPLORE

Popcar is a car sharing service with a decent amount of locations in VIC, ACT & NSW. First posted here in 2016, they are running this new promo which basically gets you to try a car for the day for $1. Probably a good time for those going away for a break.

Pricing

To be eligible, all you need is a valid driver's license, P2 or higher and a valid Visa or Mastercard.

No other charges as long as you keep in under 100kms and don't trash the car. No exit fees or anything else that I can see.

EDIT: Not QLD.

  • Are they not in Brisbane, or am I mistaken?

    • Map only shows 6 in Byron Bay and none in Brisbane.

  • +1

Looks interesting, but not in QLD unfortunately (update title please). They're in Byron Bay which is still NSW.

    • Ah, for some reason I thought Byron was in QLD. Obviously don't travel much up north. :)

      • Ah haha, I thought you must have glanced at the map and thought they were in Bris.

  • What's the excess if you are involved in an accident?

    • +2

Insurance is included in your hourly and daily usage however you can choose to reduce your insurance excess liability from $1500 (or $2000 if under 25) to $0. Insurance Excess Reduction costs $1.50 per hour. You can select this option upon joining and change your preference at anytime.

My car insurance excess (on my own car) is $700 so $1500 seems a bit high.

      • +1

CarNextDoor has 500 Excess option which seems much better

      • +1

You usually have to pay the excess even if not at fault, and then it's refunded after its gone through insurance which can take months

  • Anyone else having trouble uploading ID

    • I'm having probs uploading 10MB front ID + 10MB back ID.

      • +3

when your phone takes HD photos and now you got upload problems to deal with.

  • …when joining our 'Standby' plan…

    What does "Standby" plan mean?

    • +1

It's their no monthly cost plan but comes at higher usage costs. Plans

  • +2

Does this sign you up for the subscription plan?

The deal is good but Car Next Door or Flex or whatever other car share is better value I think since they have more cars around me, lower excess options, cheaper per KM rate and daily rates (not all cases will this be true).

    • +1

No monthly fees on the standby plan.

A Popcar Experience Consultant will be in touch the next business day to introduce themselves and take you through everything that Popcar offers to ensure your Experience is maximised

Wut? This seems a bit archaic. Who answers phone calls these days? The only phone calls I get are from scammers, so I never pick up the call.

    • Watch out with the amount of cars they currently have they are desperate for more .

    • Yes a phone call would be stupid and annoying.

    • anyone who works for a living answers phone calls these days.

Is there a date you need to redeem the free day of driving by?

anyone know if they do a credit check?

was a bit annoyed I tried car next door once and got a credit check on my file (probably obvious to some but if i knew i wouldnt have tested it out to help one of their staff lol)

    • -3

they will do a credit check if they say so in the T&C you agree to when you sign up. If its not mentioned then they wont. This would be obvious to anyone thats agreed to the T&C.

Anything in particular that would cause them to reject your application (e.g. bad credit, accidents etc.)?

      • +1

        I have a credit score of 780+

I've never had any demerit points nor fines issued in the last 20+ years of driving (albeit I mostly drive just to the supermarket around my area).

I think they were just flooded with applications from the ozbargain effect.

However, the advertisement is still up.

Has anyone actually gotten this deal successfully?

Need to be under 10 mins away to one of their vehicles, apparently. Using their map the closest to my home address is 13 mins away or 7 if via a toll road. Odd policy.

"Thank you for your application to become a Popcar member.

Unfortunately as you live outside the radius to our vehicles, we won’t be able to process your application at this time. Unless you are able to provide a proof of work or university address that is within our radius of 10 minutes to our vehicles.

If you are unable to supply a proof of address, we will refund your joining payment and keep your details on file for when we expand and have a vehicle closer to you

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to let me know
