This is bloody brilliant - highly recommended

    • I am impressed with the build quality, cheaper than many of the non-smart sprinkler controllers. You can auto set and forget, override manually from the APP on your phone by the press of a button or just say "hey Google water the lawn"

  • +3

Been running one of these for the last couple of years and it's fantastic. A few of the neighbours were so impressed they each got one of their own too! Very VERY highly recommended… even when using without Google Assistant!

  • Looks delicious. Need to replace my controller soon.

    • I've never heard someone refer to a sprinkler controller as delicious :)

  • Any success in SA price match at Bunnings? Please post receipt. Thanks.

    • +1

You should have no problem price matching @Bunnings in SA but probably have to pay postage -10% Bunnings price guarantee so by my calculation $149+$25 postage less 10% so should come out $156.60

      • $20 postage to me over in Brisbane. But their website has outdated info. https://www.irrigationworld.net.au/delivery-returns/ mentions free delivery to all locations in mainland Australia for orders over $100.

        • No luck, price matched but had to include the shipping. So $156.60

  • For the uninitiated, what sort of devices does this control to turn on/off the water flow?

    • +1

Just replaces your normal garden variety programmable sprinkler timer for garden sprinklers, accommodates 6 stations or solenoid valves and can be setup & run from the unit or from a phone APP .

      • So something like this K-Rain Solenoid is required for each section you want to operate separately?

        • +1

Yep that's the idea so you control solenoids such as these using a controller like the Hyve above.

  • Just prepping current yard for around 120 sqm of lawn and another 50 odd of garden bed lone spinklers, reckon 6 stations is ample for that? Will be running off a bore

    • +1

Not an expert, but I am running 3 stations with a bigger area than that so should be fine.

    • +1

      Easy mate, plenty

      • Champions thanks for the confirmation guys, have a good Chrissy!

        • there is a 12 station version as well if u need

    • Will depend on the water pressure you get, which depends on the bore pump you have. I'm doing ~250sqm of lawn with only 2 stations so as long as your bore pump is capable, you shouldn't have any issues.

    • You could put sub surface irrigation in if you want to reduce water consumption. Not as cheap as sprinklers but pays for itself in water usage.

I've got experience with numerous irrigation controllers as I install them at work.
This Bhyve is my favourite so far. Easy app, reliable, well priced.
    I highly recommend this.

    • +1

Any experience with the Rachio Pro 3? I've heard the Rachio destroy the Bhyve… But have no experience with either.

  • Do you need an Electrician to swap out the old controller with this one?

    • +1

      No, it's low voltage

      • +1

24VAC is actually classified as extra low voltage.

Electrician definitely not needed though unless the existing unit has its 230/240VAC supply hard wired and not via a socket outlet.

  • Pretty decent video review of this on youtube, which I think is the same unit, and shows some installation and setup bits.

I have one of these and it's been great!

Love being able to test the sprinklers from my phone when standing next to a problem instead of running back and forth through the water.
Highly recommend the product, 5/7 :)

  • Can someone recommend irrigation system installer in western Sydney? Thanks.

  • +2

West Australians don't forget to claim the rebate…

    https://www.watercorporation.com.au/save-water/water-saving-…

  • So you need an electrician to install this?

  • Bought one of these 6 months ago. Very happy with it. Highly recommend it.

I'm in WA but couldn't be bothered jumping through the hoops to get the rebate. I think I failed at ozbargaining :(

    • +4

Same - didn't know about it but looking at the criteria I'm not eligible because I didn't get an irrigation consultant to program it. Pay someone to come out and program something that is ridiculously simple to do using an app - overkill much?

      • +1

Waste of local government money too. Ridiculous idea. The people who would need that help probably shouldn't be allowed to touch the controller after the setup.

      • It is very easy for a politician to do things like this. It Isnt their money. Trouble is once rebates like this are introduced it is very hard to remove them as those that benefit (suppliers) start squealing, as well as the “free stuff” crew.
The corrupted energy market is the most egregious example at present. too far gone I suspect.

    • The year before, the offer was 200 for the controller - no set up required. I bought one at that stage. They contacted me twice to discuss what I thought about it, the programming etc

They also wanted to come out and meet and see how I'd set it up, which I declined.

I suspect this requirement came out of the results from this survey.

It's ridiculously easy to set up, but if enough people got confused by it, I can see how this happened.

  • Noob here. Are you all running pop up sprinklers with pipes in the ground?

    • Sub surface irrigation and drippers.

    • Depends what you're watering! Pop-ups are used for lawn areas but drippers, dribblers, sub-surface irrigation and spray heads are used for garden beds, herb gardens and pot plants.

  • I have one of these. I like it but it frequently has a 'pump fault' and I can hear a thud sound somewhere. I have to try 3-10 times manually to get it to work.

    • You might need a pressure tank between your pump and the solenoids. It buffers the water pressure and stops your pump having to turn on and off too often

Can't use water sprinklers with Sydney's level 2 water restrictions

    • Are you sure about this? I spoke to Sydney Water earlier this week and was told that it’s ok as long as the sprinklers can only operate via the irrigation controller and cannot work directly off a garden hose / tap.

This is taken directly from Sydney Water (https://www.sydneywater.com.au/SW/water-the-environment/what…)

You can't connect weeping hoses, soaker hoses, sprinklers and other watering devices usually intended for direct connection to a hose to a smart watering controller to comply with Level 2 restrictions.

Has anyone just used power supplies and smart switches to do the same thing?

    • +2

I've begun to go down that same route a few times over the last couple of decades using simple timer circuits & kits back in the 90s then a RPi in the 00s and although they worked OK by the time I was finished it ended up costing about the same amount (or close to it) as a commercial product anyway. So yes, I'm sure Smart Switches, Power Supplies and App control will result in a perfect working system you've got to consider the fact that it's a lot of cobbling around just to do something that's already been perfected over & over. Also it's good not to forget that units such as this B-Hyve will also work perfectly as a stand-alone device so that's a layer of very valuable redundancy if every anything goes awry with your Wifi/connectivity. The risk of losing thousands of dollars worth of plants & lawn due to tech failure is very real so if you do go down the DIY/Smart Switch route you'll absolutely need to consider at least one level of redundancy! My 2c anyway :)

I have installed a b-hyve controller and I also tinker with electronics. I can tell you that just to get up to a functional standard on par with the B-Hyve you would be spending a lot more on hardware and 100+ hours in development. That is before you even think about making it reliable and durable. It was worth it at $300 at $150 it's a steal. Keep in mind you can expand the system using their orbit products.

  • This deal comes at a great time as my Hunter controller has been doing weird things for the past two months and doesnt seem to keep its programming anymore. Received a $700 water bill so it appears its been watering 100 times a day when im at work. Turned it off and cant wait for this new one to come!

  • Are these things cloud only, i.e, must one connect it to the internet for it to work. Also, does it have cloud functionality, can I control it when I'm travelling overseas.

I like flexibility to control it when I'm away, but some products these days can only be managed from the cloud, so if the product is no longer supported our the company closes down the hardware is rendered useless.

I hope you get what I mean.

    • They do it ALL… local control via the front panel screen & controls, Wifi control and also remote (cloud) control. There IS a B-Hyve model that has no screen which is a bit cheaper however it's always best to have full local control with gear like this IMO.

That's awesome, what are some of the various voice controls you can use on this? Like, can you just say "hey google, water zone 6 for 22 mins" ?

  • Perth people may want to consider this - https://www.watercorporation.com.au/save-water/water-saving-…

    Opps already been metioned
