Phonebot Accusing Me of Water Damage on iPhone 7

I purchased an iPhone 7 plus from Phonebot that had a defective screen so I sent it back. After 2 weeks and a lot of complaint for an update they send me photos of the phone with water damage!! They're accusing me of wanting a free repair or refund.

I've emailed ACCC. What are my other options? I've never had to deal with such a dodgy business before =/ I just want a refund now.

Wrong organisation. Contact your state's relevant Fair Trading as the ACCC do not investigate individual complaints.

    • thanks so much! I've requested Westpac to bring back the funds as well. thanks

They are probably saying that because the stickers underneath the case are probably indicating the presence of fluid (there are a bunch of stickers in the phone that change colour when wet). Problem being that in Australia, it's pretty normal to have humidity high enough to set those things off (so basically, no water damage, but looks like it to the untrained/lazy eye).

That's why most reputable companies will skip past the water stickers, and look for water damage on the board itself!

    • Thanks! I've submitted it to ACCC,fair trade in Victoria and requested for a refund from the bank. Hope one comes through

    • it's pretty normal to have humidity high enough

Asia has more humidity than us, so do many parts of the world including parts of USA.

So companies either need to get onboard and come up with a better solution or start repairing water damaged devices.

      • Those things are meant to be indicators there might have been enough water to caise damage, not meant to be a "yup, there's water damage" as far as I know.

*I should say those things should mean. I'm sure companies use it as the sole point as a gotcha.

        • not meant to be a "yup, there's water damage" as far as I know.

Google 'water damage phone' and you'll find thousands of threads that repairs have been rejected straight away because of that.

Just having in in your pocket on warm day can trip those things from perspiration.

iPhone 7 is waterproof (IP67) so that shouldn't effect anything!

    • Omg I didn't even realise. I'll advise ACCC and fair trade thanks !!

    • Apple’s warranty doesn’t cover water damages anyway.

    • its water RESISTANT not water proof

For the sake of $200 bucks this is what you get.

    • It was actually 600.

      • he means 'savings'

        • it's retail $1100 new

          • @Jolim90: The Apple store is selling the iPhone 8 Plus for $949.

The reason why I buy new and from a reputable retailer is to avoid this foolishness. I had my faulty iPhone swapped out for a new one by Apple immediately after testing. Sometimes it’s worth paying a premium. You got what you paid for.

This business is doggy. They sold me a stolen phone and when I asked for a full refund, they said “I can’t give you full refund because you already used my phone.” They said that I can’t just come back to them anytime to ask for a refund because I changed my mind, Yes you’re right but only if you sold to me a legitimate phone.
It was a pain dealing with them and also the customer service is terrible.

Thanks for the comment. When the item was sold to you it wasnt blocked .You came into the stkilda store and got a full refund once it got blocked. The staff member asked you nicely if it was ok to give you a replacement to which you declined. They then refunded you. Iv made clear to you numerous times that these phones come from customers or organizations and that sometimes customers do the wrong thing and claim insurance AFTER they have sold the phone. Yours was one of them. Dont know for how long youll keeep writing about this and not move on

      • +2

Yep. I would have moved on only if that staff member was nice enough to give me my money back without an attitude. He wasn’t talking to me in a normal tone and I felt intimidated. I will keep mentioning my case to whoever I can so no one would have to be in the same situation.

      • And by the way, that staff member whom I’m pretty sure was the manager of the store, didn’t want to give me a full refund because I had been using that phone for a month. He talked loudly to intimidate me, only when I mention the police and the ACCC, he then gave me the full refund.

I talked to the same guy he was so rude!! He is the manager. I have a recorded message of him yelling at me ! Lucky u got the refund I'm stuck with a bust phone

          • @Jolim90: come back again but with triple zero ready on your phone.

  • My only similar experience is: my iphone 5 had a swollen battery compromising the screen quality, the Genius at Apple Store looked at it and said water damage cause the little red flag was visible. The phone never went in the water but he did not care, cause the red thing is their way out. That was my last iPhone.

    • Iv had an iphone xs max declined due to same reason. The face ID didnt work but somehow the technician at Apple told me that the sticker was red under the sim tray and that its been in contact with liquid

    Gday JO
Your phone has been sent you via express post today. The handset has been working completely fine after numerous tests and getting rid of the white ingress. Please check the video attached of the white residue found inside

I feel like i need to clarify the community here whats going on as we advertise here and alot of fellow ozb's have scored some great deals from us.

You received the handset on Friday 23rd Nov. After a week of use,on 28th November you contacted us on fb messenger via website and sent us a video that bottom half of the screen was playing up. You were advised to send the phone back to us and we received it on 3rd Dec. During assessment by the technician your phone was found to hand white ingress inside near the bottom half of the screen (where you reported the problem) due to which we declined to repair it under warranty. HOWEVER being in the festive spirit and out of courtesy we have fixed/cleaned the device and re tested it thourghly and sent it back to you.

Thanks and have a nice day
    Regards
    PB

    • The phone screen is still broken. Stop lying. I'll keep submitting truthful reviews because I need to warn people about how dodgy you guys are =)

    • I guess you guys have lost a phone and the money too, given the OPs bank has approved the chargeback

  • Also id like to add that you have left false reviews on different platforms regarding the phone being with us for about a month and that you havent heard from us. The device was with us for approx 2 weeks and i do apologize for the delay in assessment during this busy season however our turnaround times for warranty assessments are approx 2 weeks anyway

  • Ive purchased 2x samsungs from this mob and am perfectly happy with both of them
