Gym chalk (magnesium carbonate)

Would like to purchase some gym chalk and found a US seller selling 8 blocks of chalk for $26 USD delivered. Is this the cheapest price? Thanks in advance.

  • Very specialist items there HustleGame..
Obviously you're getting into climbing (given your other post), all I can say is that you could try a Chemical supplies place. MgCO3 should be pretty cheap, although they will likely only be able to supply in powdered form (easy to make your own powder ball with some old stockings though). I also made my own Chalk bag used a pocket liner from a pair of jeans as the "bag" and then used the bottom of the jeans leg as the outer cover.. The hem at the bottom is a convenient tube through which a pull cord can be threaded.
Add a carabiner and you have a half decent chalk bag..

  • Seems pretty cheap. I get small bags of chalk from my local climbing gym for $3. I don't know how much is in them but they last for ages, so 8 blocks should go a fair way.

  • 8 blocks? Henry Barber would be rolling around in his grave… if he was dead :P You planning on ticking every single hold on Araps? In all seriousness a single block lasts me 6 months worth of weekends (at the very least), just be sure to use it sparingly, not only does excess chalk 'clog up' holds, it can be detrimental to your climbing if you use more than a dusting. On a side note I got a free chalk bag when I first signed up to Rock magazine in the early 90's and it's still going strong :D

    • Thanks all for your input.

diamond - Do you know the difference between gym chalk and rock climbing chalk? I will also be using the chalk for weight training and calisthenics. Do you suggest purchasing one block then? I'm not really planning on purchasing 8 blocks. Most sellers are either selling them in single and 8 blocks so I don't really have any other option.

      • I use climbing chalk in the gym and it helps to improve my grip a lot. IMO chalk is chalk.

  • I'm pretty sure that rock climbers use the same chalk as gymnasts, being a rock climber myself. Chalk is chalk pretty much if you go and by a bag or chalk from a climbing gym/outdoor store. Obviously it depends on how big those blocks are to determine whether its a good deal or not.

I wouldn't buy anything which isn't a rock-climbing brand. Back in my youth we tried buying chalk from the pharmacy and ended up with tonnes of useless stuff which made things more slippery. Also beware of calcium carbonate, that is also "chalk" but not what you want.

    Get something like this

Not that these are necessarily the best prices, just what to get

    • Thank you so much once again. The second link you posted seem to be the best deal for me. Cheers.
