The best jaffle maker! Are they all bad now..?

Need my fellow ozbargainers help..

Im trying to buy a new jaffle maker – dont care if its 2 or 4 slice – but it needs to SEAL well, CUT in half, be HOT enough to make it nice a crispy on the outside, and that is IT!!

All the reviews i have read from ppl who have bought breville or sunbeam models seem to believe that you need HUGE pieces of bread to get these to work, or that they dont cut anymore….

Any ideas from people who have bought one in the last couple of years?

FYI, Breville have two 2 slice models, one is bigger filling. They also have a 4 slice with electronic control.
Sunbeam have a deep fill 4 slice

  • I have the standard Breville and it's fine. I looked at the big fill version but the jaffles are actually smaller IMO. Taller in the centre but the crust/seal around the edges is about 20mm wide which is ridiculous so while there's more filling in the centre, in reality it's no bigger because you've got a lot more crust cancelling out what you gained in filling. Hard to describe but if you look at them side by side you'll see.

Cuts well enough. Only lasts a couple of years before the non stick coating starts to flake however but that seems to be the case with all of them.

The best one I own are some Rome brand cast iron ones to use over a fire. Not the most practical or quickest to use at home.

All the reviews i have read

Don't be a slave to online reviews.

People LOVE to rush online and have a rant. People don't rush online to leave gushing positive reviews because their new jaffle maker made a nice jaffle.

      Hahaha. So True.

      That jaffle was delicious!

Definitely a factor. Plus, if your jaffle failed, you'd have a lot more time now to post a bad review because otherwise you'd be enjoying your steaming hot jaffle….

I’ve had the Breville Original 74’ since 2015
    https://www.breville.com/au/en/products/grills-sandwich-make…

    Has been perfect

    • I bought this 2 days ago for $74. I read reviews prior to purchasing it and also noticed that people were saying that it was too big (or small), I don't remember. But a friend of mine has it and said it's not really an issue - took their word for it and got it. Still waiting for it to be shipped, but I'm sure it'll be good. Can't wait to try it out!

    • Correct. Best one by far.

    • I bought this one a few years back to replace a cheaper one.
It's definitely a good unit but bread from Aldi is still a little too small to fill it out properly. It still works and seals though so I'm happy with it.

My parents are still using the actual original like this one below. They don't make them like they used to.

  • Got the Original 2 Slice
Its pretty good, and we use it a lot, but you do need large pieces of bread to get a proper seal. The largest size readily available at the supermarket works fine.

  • I currently have a Breville The Big One and am happy with it. It works just fine with std square loaf.

Never noticed any leaking at the edges unless using a more watery filling such as left over stew etc, and nothing will stop that. But using your more standard fillings, as long as you're careful to keep the filling a few MM inside the edge, just about any brand name jaffle maker should be fine.

  • Yeah, I know I shouldn't worry about reviews but they are just so mixed and since we don't use mega sour dough loaves I was worried….we have a 4 slice Aldi one Nd it has been crap - just doesn't stay hot enough so it's not crispy at all! We only do ham and cheese style so it shouldn't be rocket science surely!

We use this one from Kmart and it works well.

    • At $15 why not give ita try. Its reviews are good.

The alternative cheaper at $7.50 Kmart other unit isnt as well rated.

      eg 23/11/19
      Fair
Doesn't completely cut through the bread and only takes very small slices

    • Yep we have this one too and it's absolutely brilliant. Have had for about 6 months with no issues.

The cheaper kmart one, when I looked at it in store, was very shallow - couldn't see how you could make a jaffle with a decent amount of filling.

  • I did some research on this about 3 years ago and I think this one is supposed to be the best. Extra large pieces are needed for cutting but I don't use them and it works fine. I haven't owned any other ones, so can't compare. Perhaps the cheaper ones will work fine too.

Thanks to everyone who has written something - this is the sort of content we need! I'll have a look but so far it's between the retro breville 74, base 2 slice breville, and el cheapo deep fill Kmart…

    • Think I may upgrade to the Breville '74 myself before winter. My current standard one will probably be due to retire by then. We need a deal on the '74

  • From my experience, the crispy on the outside is achieved by putting a bit of margarine on the outside of the bread.

Without the margarine, I find that sometimes the bread becomes dry despite there being cheese and other moist/fluid items on the inside of the bread.

I always butter the outside - surely only heathens don't!

    • Absolute must to butter the "outside" of the bread. not only helps get that golden colour but reduces stick as well.

If you like margarine, why not get old sump oil, its cheaper 😀

  • Breville all the way. The original and the best. Slap some taco mince, chipotle sauce and cheese on two bits of bread and you got yourself a real treat.

    • They do 5 different models!

      • oh, that is quite the conundrum - I just bought the cheapo one that is like 30 bucks. Still going strong. gets that good cut down the middle, and even can take a large piece of bread if you don't mind a bit of overhang, still seals her up real good.

  • Slightly off topic:

Post your Jaffle recipes here please!

    • Chicken, cheese, pineapple and onion.

      Baked bean, cheese and onion.

      Creamed corn and cheese.

Ham, roast pork, swiss cheese, American mustard and sliced gherkin. Sort of a Cubano.

Tuna in olive oil drained, mayo or aioli and Colby cheese.

Ham, tomato, red onion, sliced Kalamata olives, semi dried tomato and cheese.

And last but not least, plain old canned braised steak and onion.

    • Nutella & banana

    • Looks like Breville included this recipe e-book with their '74 model:

      https://www.breville.com/content/dam/breville/au/assets/misc…

      • The '74 came with a square flat box of recipes; not sure if that's still the case these days

Source: worked in a department store

  • I bought the '74 and find it to be somewhere between shit and average, mostly due to it being expensive and the size of the bread required not really working well with a lot of supermarket breads (bread too small / maker template too big). Would not buy again & do not recommend.

  • This thread is making me hungry…

  • Great thread OP - was just about to post a similar one myself as my old one just died.

Did you end up buying the Breville '74 or el-cheapo K-mart? If so how did you go?

    • ended up with the "regular" breville two jaffle maker…..has been a solid performer so far but starting to stick a bit….cuts well though :)
