Basically you preorder a game online, then within 6 weeks (whilst waiting for your supercheap Limited Edition UK copy to arrive, or instead of renting or "EB renting") you take it back, and they will give you store credit amounting to your purchase price minus $18.

A couple of examples:

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 - cost $98.00 - trade after 6 weeks for $80.00
  • Battlefield 3 - cost $98.00 - trade after 6 weeks for $80.00
  • Gears of War 3 - cost $88.00 - trade after 6 weeks for $70.00

Might want to check the deal with the store credit at your local GAME though…I know in WA you get a credit note with 12 months expiry…not 100% sure about other states…

  • what is their angle?????Seems too good to be true

They tie your money to their store.
Buying a game at full rrp already gives them a profit, and then when you trade it in they sell it as pre-owned for $15-20 cheaper than the price of the new game (EB and Game make the most money out of pre-owned), making yet more profit again, and then getting you to spend that trade in credit at their store, making yet more profit.

Trance N Dance is right, however this will work for me, as it allows me to play BF3 on day 1 (hopefully!) whilst waiting for my UK preorder, and GAME have enough specials in store to be able to spend $80 in 12 months…plus the guys at my local GAME are awesome when it comes to scoring gaming deals : )

  • I wonder what the trade in value of games not bought online would be.

  • Intersting but issue with not being able to use you credit notes online.

I think both jb and eb allow you trade games in-store for credit that you can use in store or online, means you can buy games with your trade in. Unfortunatley game.com.au online dont offer same option. Everything online must be purchased with a CC. I prefer to buy those games with my trade ins.

    • Yeah I have credit with GAME too, but can't use it online.

Pretty sure you can't with EB either…dunno about JB…

  • hmm not worth it to me. You are still losing money and paying more in the first place.

  • Hummmm… I am keen for Skyrim on the 11/11/11

EDIT: Doesn't apply to PC games… can suck me off.

The DRM means they can't do trades on PC games.

paying aussie retail price initially sounds like a losing situation altogether :D

Not a great deal at all. You don't get your $80 back in cash - but rather, in STORE CREDIT, which means that you have to spend it an GAME's overpriced RRP stores. You're still better off getting it online with express shipping:

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 at Playasia is $59.56 + (Express Shipping with Fedex) $15.31 = $74.87 - still MUCH cheaper than GAME's $98 or even $80 store credit…

    • Two things

1 - everyone excluding yourself knows that you don't get cash back trading your games

2 - if there is going to be dlc for mw3, getting a copy from Asia the dlc might not be compatible with the play asia copy

    • Well in that case the difference would only be $5, and yeah, you would have $80 to spend in GAME, but given the amount of great deals they have, that can easily be spent on bargains within 12 months.

At the end of the day, if you are happy to spend $80 in GAME, then using this promo allows you to order the cheapest price overseas and get normal delivery, and still play on day 1.

Tal_Shiar's second point is also well worth considering ; )

        1. PC gamer's aren't a part of this.
        2. PS3 users can just create another region's account to get DLC anyways.
        3. Of course I'm aware you don't get cash back - hence why I highlighted that you make a loss by relying on STORE CREDIT (when you can get every game at GAME virtually cheaper online anyways).
        4. The difference isn't $5, it's close to $25.

What this 'deal' is, is paying $98 on a rental, of which, $80 of that, you get back, but ONLY to spend at the store's overpriced RRP. It's just a way to get more pre-owned copies for them (which gives them plenty more profit) and a ploy to make gamers shop from them instead of buying online. I'm surprised this even needs clarification.

The only group of gamers I may see benefitting form this would maybe be, at best, solely X360 users.

        • This is how I see the monetary difference…

To play on day 1, you pay ~ $75.

To play on day 1, I pay ~ $63 (with standard shipping) plus $18 for GAME rental = $81.

          It's $6, not $25.

  • @ Kirt
That Playasia price was just an example, not the cheapest online price - there are plenty of cheaper prices online -e.g. Gamelane have the game for $69.95 + $2 for express shipping, that's $71.95. The problem with GAME's deal, is that, if you're buying a cheaper version from the UK, that's $65.99 (Ozgame) + $98 (from Game, to play at launch) = $163.99 total. And then, of that total, the $80 you 'get back' is limited only to GAME's selection of games, of which are generally all at RRP.

So, for instance, (A) buys the game from Gamelane, he pays $71.75, then he buys ACR from Ozgame at $59.99 = $131.74
Person (B) buys the game from GAME, at $98, and the same game at Ozgame for $65.99 = $163.99, now he then buys ACR from GAME at $98, so the total is: $261.99, now deduct the $80 credit = $181.99.

    So that's $131.74 against $181.99 - and just over $50 difference.

If you are a big GAME fan, who really needs the PAL version on day 1, then this may be a good deal, but purely on monetary reasons, it's not that great - but it's a worthwhile post nonetheless :)

    • Yeah buying multiple games changes this deal…personally I just want to play BF3 on the 360 on day 1, but still get the Limited Edition to get the DLC for free, and if it means $80 credit at GAME for 12 months, then I am happy ; )

Using this deal would total around $73 ($55 UK order + $18).

Some mates have had bad experiences with Gamelane and day 1 releases…none with GAME online though…

BTW I am more than open to suggestions on ways to acheive the above :D

  • For those who are worried about how your cash gets tied up into GAME, well the plus side is that you can get reward points there. For every $500 you spend you get $25.50, or rather for every $1 you spend you get 10 points, and you get a $25.50voucher sent to you automatically once your balance reaches 5000 points. (if you have 5100 points or multiples of 100 over the threshold they deduct it from your balance as well and give you more on your voucher at the same rate $25.50/5000 points)
So consider this $170 towards your $500 spend to a $25.50 voucher for $98. Repeat two more times and that's $25.50 for free.
