Advice Needed on Decent Lawn Edger

I currently have an electric (plug-in, not battery-driven) Ozito lawn edger.

On my soft-leaf buffalo lawn, even when I have the blade-depth set to maximum, it doesn't really cut through the grass - the buffalo runners just seem to be pushed down by the blade and then spring back after it has passed. (There is some cutting, but not enough to actually significantly trim the edge.)

Should I be looking to

  • buy a new sharper blade for the existing edger?
  • buy a better electric plug-in edger? (If so which)
  • buy a petrol lawn edge? (if so which)

The best petrol ones seem to go for $750+ which is more than I want to spend on my fairly limited edging needs.

    use a spade
    .

  • Buy some scissors, you get more precision then.

  • Have you committed yourself to any battery powered eco systems like Makita, Ryobi or ozito. are you going to look into getting other tools as well. this might sway your decision a little. I have Ryobi 18V as I only have small lawn and edging however I also have a about 10 tools that use the same battery. I have 3 batteries and it runs all the tools I need for the home.

Yeah, I have Ryobi One hedge trimmer, whipper snipper and leaf blower and some batteries of various sizes.

Then probably worth your while looking at the edger.

How big of an area are you trying to edge?

Use a spade to get it looking good, then a whipper-snipper to maintain it.

    • Not that much, but enough to make a spade seem daunting. I do actually have an old Bunnings manual edger with a half-moon blade, but it seems too blunt to go through anything. Even if I stand on the top of the blade, it just sort of rocks to and fro on the dense grass with no cutting action. But I'll try the spade again..

      • Yeah the half moon blade, what a POS.

If you can stump up $450 - $500 you can't go wrong buying a 2 stroke Atom lawn edger. A bit more for a 4 stroke.

I've used them for 15 years, never let me down, and recently upgraded to a 4 stroke Atom as mixing oil and petrol is so 20 century.

Makes light work of the coarsest runner grass and IMO edges look neater than using a whipper-snipper

    • They have these in electric too. Less maintenance, and no more hassle than using OPs current edger.

    Honda!

  • I have the Ryobi One edger and it does a great job on my Buffalo nature strips. Living on a corner block it gets a good workout, cuts clean and does about 90mt of edges in under 10 minutes

    • Is it this version?
      https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-18v-one-cordless-edger-ski…

I also live on a corner block but have never found something I am happy with yet! Edging takes me hours!.

I have been using the 2014 version of the 36v Ryobi edger - i notice the blade on it is different then the newer versions - it is rectangular.

I might be able to buy a new blade perhaps.

  • Get a Stihl

Try sharpening the blade before you buy anything. Then try a new blade if the sharpened one works but blunts quickly.

Don’t get a petrol one if you are already using battery or corded items.

  • I have this one and its amazing. https://www.ryobi.com.au/outdoor/products/details/1500w-edge…

As others have said, its very easy to use, does a great job quickly, and I haven't found grass it can't cut yet.

Takes some practice to get good with corners, but for normal straight edges its brilliant. I did get this corded version though (about 4 years ag0). I don't know if the battery version was around then, but I have a 50mt outdoor extensions cord so no problems. Did buy from Bunnings but I can't see it on their website currently.
