Vic Energy Companies - Recommendations, Reviews, Deals

Just moved to VIC, been living overseas for a while and just trying to set up utilities for our new rental. I know AGL and Energy Australia but there’s a bunch of smaller companies I’ve not heard of.

I used the VIC govt comparison tool (as well as others), and so far getting some different prices.

  • Powershop came in as cheapest on two websites but not on the VIC govt one. They also get mixed reviews. Should I avoid?

  • The names I know of (that aren’t typically known for their energy) are Dodo and Kogan. How are these guys?

  • Cheapest unknown company recommended by govt site is Elysian energy. Reviews?

There’s a few others too (powerclub momentum commander simply etc)… any recommendations for these and I’ll consider.

Basically any reviews or recommendations is valuable. First time renting in Australia (lived at home then lived overseas for almost a decade)… I got no idea.

    Basically any reviews

Just look for the lowest price. Honestly who cares about good/bad experiences with their customer service. For gas/elec IMO it comes down to price.

I'm with Tango in VIC on 16c/kw and 89c Daily.

    • I guess only reason why I’m looking for reviews is Cos we may disconnect and move in a few months. This is only a short term lease we have. Need a company that’ll make it easy.
But looks like Tango get good OzB reviews.

      • In my experience (I've churned a few times) you can have really bad experiences with any of the retailers, big names or small. It comes down to the wholesale provider in the area, not so much the retailer anyway.

  • Tango are awesome.

  • I would highly recommend Tango as well. Been with them for 3+ years(when they were Pacific Hydro) and no issues whatsoever

  • I'm with Momentum; never had a problem.

Depends on how strongly you feel about these things, but you may want to have a look at AGL's record on regulatory compliance, on the environment, and on some of their current proposals (e.g. importing gas) before you look to choose them.

  • Tango.

  • Thanks all. Looks like I’ll take a look into Tango, though they are estimated $200 more than the competition….

    • It comes down to your region.

Tango are cheapest in my area and easy to deal with.

  • I have Red Energy. Their discounts are less but prices are less too.

I recently moved (VIC to VIC)… I had a great plan with Tango but they couldn't keep the same rates… I decided to stay with them anyway but I am also considering other options. I also went to the VIC comparison website and became aware of the existence of Elysian and Commander. However, Elysian rates on the website (98.58 ¢/day and 18.37 ¢/kWh flat rate) are not exactly what I found on their website. The company has different packages of 200, 400, 800kWh, and they refund or add 19.250 c/kWh for additional or unused energy. That's not 18.37 ¢/kWh flat rate… And, yes, I am considering the same ID offer (ELY115927MR) for the same area.

    Rates:
    https://elysianenergy.com.au/citipower-distribution-area/

    VIC comparison website:
    Supply charges:
    98.58 ¢/day
    Flat:
    18.37 ¢/ kWh

If we consider the 200kWh plan, and they suggest that 98.58c is the daily charge, then 98.58*30=2940, or 29.40 from the plan (72.80/month for 200kWh) representing the daily supply charge. If that is the case, the remaining $43.40 is the 200kWh (or 21.7 ¢/kWh, NOT the 18.37 ¢/kWh). That is 20.42 ¢/kWh for the 400 kWh plan. In summary, unless there is something wrong with my math, the "offer" doesn't exist. Am I wrong?

All the rates are "incl. GST".
