Who Pays for Cancellation of Flight Due to Strike @ Jetstar?

I paid and booked domestic holiday for Christmas. Jetstar strike going on and flights were cancelled today.

I believe Jetstar will pay to rearrange flight or refund flight cost but who pays for activities and hotel cost that I booked and paid for?

Credit card complimentary insurance doesn't cover cancellation due to strike action.

I am flying in two weeks, does travel insurance covers the cost or Jetstar pays for everything?

Have you rung the hotel and who ever organises the activities? Perhaps they might help, especially seeing it's not your fault.

    • Booked everything through Expedia, booking.com and kkday. All my booking were non refundable. Not sure I can ask them….

Travel insurance. You know, the thing that's a complete waste of money until you really really need it…

Read your policy and contact them directly.

    • I haven't got travel insurance yet that's why I am asking if anyone has similar experience and it is worth investing.

Thanks for the link, lot to read. Majority won't cover if strike action are known before purchasing…in my case I booked travel before strike action publish in media but if I purchase insurance now then it may not be covered 😭

Yea, that's probably standard practise. Same with health insurance and pre-existing conditions.

Hotels booked through booking.com can usually be cancelled at no charge, they're pretty good at that, so worth checking. Events/activities unlikely to be cancelled but you can ask if you can transfer(sell) to someone else or change the date. Some might be understanding.

Lol at thinking you can buy insurance after the event.

Do you buy car insurance after you have a crash too?

Yeah, it's like workers who want to join their union just before they're about to be sacked.

    Based on this news article:

The company says customers travelling from December 13 to December 20 can request a full refund prior to flying.

I hope you get refunded soon, good luck.

OP is asking about hotel and activities booked.

    • I am not worrying about flight cost as it will be refunded but mainly worried about $1500 spend on hotel plus activities booked on non refundable deals. ☹️

Unfortunately people dont think about travel insurance until the last minute.

Always take out travel insurance when you book your flight, or at least before booking hotels etc especially if they are non refundable.

I dont think Jetstar or any other airline will refund other costs.

Can you travel on another airline. (Yes it could cost more, but saves the hotel costs - you have to do your own maths)

        • I did this for a recent trip and then they charged me $35 processing fee for booking more than 2 weeks in advcance. SCTI is the company - something about 14 day cooling off period. Changed the destination due to personal reason from international to domestic and they didnt give full refund. Still waiting for the refund by the way, was over 2 weeks ago.

have you checked the cost of other airlines?

    where are you travelling to?

    • Traveling to cairns. I booked flights for $1500 and current cost for same day is $2900 . So not worth changing airline.😣

      • But Jetstar is still selling flights for 2 weeks time to Cairns surely they can put you on one of those.

Give more details and we might have some ideas that could work

Best be booking with another airline quickly

Jetstar will rearrange the flights, you might have to go a couple of hours early or later…or they will put you on Qantas.

Sounds like you're just trying to get out of your trip because you don't want to go anymore.

At the moment there are no strike planned for the date I am traveling…my worry is if the strike continue. My activities booked for three days after I reach cairns. So delay by a day would cost me. I will call Jetstar tomorrow morning to find more options they can provide.

See my comment below. FIRST GET your travel insurance NOW before any cancellation of the flight you are on.

        Do it online NOW

      • You will be fine, the strikes are only planned for 4 hours each day in the morning. Qantas owns Jetstar so they have access to all their flights to reaccomodate. I would say worst case you would be delayed by 6ish hours. Cairns is a very popular destination with many flights.

      • Either way, get travel insurance regardless.

    • That sounds like a good plan if they'll do that for OP?

  • Hang on your flights havent been cancelled. Flights this weeknd have been, not later.

I understand you would rightly be concerned about your christmas flights but no cancellations due to strike yet on flights scheduled in 2 weeks.

    Get travel insurance now.

See this link for which companies cover you.

Wait, I heard on the news they said no strike during Christmas period?!

    • Correct

      From The Australian

The Australian Federation of Air Pilots has said no industrial action would be taken by pilots from December 21 to January 3 in the hope Jetstar would reschedule meetings.

So how’s the time for the op to get travel insurance, in case things change

  • Depending on how you paid, you might have travel insurance and not know it. Eg. If you paid by an ANZ credit card, travel insurance is included if you can prove that you spent $500 or more in relation to the travel.
Have a look in the pds for your card, you might get a nice suprise.

    • Credit card complimentary insurance doesn't cover cancellation due to strike action.

  • can you switch airline carrier??? any other flights that you could now buy as the Jetstar will be refunded.. still make use of the hotel and activities

  • Arn't you listening…. they are offering alternative flights, or money back.
You do have a tv don't you? You can ring the airline, can't you?

  • who pays for activities and hotel cost that I booked and paid for?

Travel insurance…. If you don't have it, then you.

    Update

Jetstar cancels 10pc of January domestic flights as wage dispute intensifies

  • Never ever book with Jetstar. We tried them a few years ago when Bali had the eruptions, they were useless, claimed the flight on insurance and got there with Air Asia.

Good old Jetstar does it again!
As per above, rebook your flights with another airline.
You have plenty of time to shop around for flights.
Being told this far in advance is no excuse for accomodation cancellation.
Its not like you cant make other arrangements.
Worst case scenario is OP drives or goes by rail/road
Now stop wasting time and get on your computer…pronto!
    And Good luck!

im pretty sure there's been media reports of strikes before yesterday (cancelled per original post)? why not purchase insurance before that..?

    • Sure… about 19 November there was talk…

Jetstar pilots come closer to possible strike action, threatening chaos over Christmas

yeah wayy before, almost a month ago per your source!
seems like negligence by op now wanting full compo from who? anyway been some good advice above.

never trust things like strikes they're never set in stone until actual day workers want to rock the plane, and if you hear any whisper around your planned dates then get the basic cover at least to cover that! good luck..
