Home Security Tips - Sensors, Door, Camera

Hi all

Moving to a small 2 bed rental home in a high(er) crime area next year for work. Looking to secure the home without modifying the house i.e. wires / drilling etc. I have a few battery sensor lights and Quikloks already, and some dummy cameras but that's it.

Was thinking about (window) sensors and maybe an outdoor & indoor camera. Should I be looking at Xiaomi (I'm a fan) or are there other brands I should consider? Would consider local or cloud storage.

Would also like something to secure the front door from the outside i.e. heavy duty lock / padlock. Might have to do some stealth drilling after all and patch it up after.

Max budget $500, prefer to spend under $300.

Thanks for your assistance

  • Check out the Wyze camera. Around $50 on Amazon US. Probably the best budget camera.

    • Do the wyze cameras have US plugs on the end? Or are they USB plugs?

If you're genuinely in a really shit area then the only thing that works is security doors, roller shutters, bars etc. to make your place look like a fortress. This makes it less appealing and too much trouble compared to your neighbours. So they'll skip yours.

IMHO cameras do nothing. Sensor sights also do nothing. If whatever you're installing locks on is glass, ie. window, then it's a waste of money. They won't be scared of knocking out a window at 11am on a weekday.

Not sure how you're planning on installing a padlock on the front door but a crowbar, rotary will make short work of anything in your price range.

Generally it's best to consider renting in a better area than spending money upgrading the Landlords house.

    • Agreed. Another problem with mounting a padlock on your front door is that anyone can come and lock you in.

    • Completely this. Cameras and sensors will only tell you WHEN your house has been broken into, it won't actually deter anyone from breaking in in the first place.

  • Just leave all your good stuff at a mates house in a better area. Leave the place in a mess, food out to attract rats etc. anyone who breaks in will realise it’s not worth it and exit again quickly.

    Ozbargain way: bikies.

  • If you have cameras in a bad area - they will steal them if they are stickon wireless ones.

I bought these little beepers from Bunnings. Each one comes in 2 bits, they are magnetic and when they separate it screams quite loudly. You install one side to the frame and one to the door or window with 3m tape. When you leave the house just turn them on. It was $24 If I remember correctly.
