New VPN Now That Private Internet Accesss (PIA) Has Been Bought by Kape

Hey OzB,

Would love some recommendations on a new VPN now that PIA is owned by Kape. I hear good things about Mullvad (mostly from reddit) but would love to hear some ideas.

I would recommend Cyber Ghost and Proton VPN.

  • Why change? Is Kape bad?

they apparently have a bad history of secretly forcing malware/adware through software downloads, selling user information etc. I don't know too much about it, but I believe where there's smoke, there's fire.

      • What software downloads? The client app?

        • Yes, users have received malware prompts by malwarebytes and symantec when updating client.

          • @crashloaded: Why do we need to use their client app? openvpn client app works fine and if one has a account that is paid via pre-paid gift cards and a temp email address, what possible user info can they get ? What am i missing here ?

I have been testing Mullvad. It's good. I am not sure I can justify the 5EUR p/m though.

I agree. Every review I've found says that Mullvad is now one of the better VPNs. Agree that 5EUR is fairly steep though. They are located in Sweden.

  • Son of a bitch I have like 3 years subscription with PIA

    • Amen brother. Me too..ffs

  • Thanks for the heads up, going to have to cancel my sub

  • Go for surfshark vpn

    • I got surfshark with the cyber Monday deal. It's been great so far.

  • Had no issues with Mullvad but it isn't exactly cheap.

Windscribe is good for the price.

  • Yuck I have a 2 years left on my subscription with them!

  • I use IPVanish.

  • The ones I heard the most ads for are ExpressVPN, NordVPN and SurfShark.

  • It all depends on your needs. If for some security from AU data retention/RSP snooping, and some animosity, CloudFlair has some offers with it's 1.1.1.1 service called Warp

  • I suggest as Mullvad doesn't ask for an E-mail nor does it store any information as it's a Generated account, so if someone does some how get into your account then the only thing they can do is pay for more VPN time. It only stores your Card if you pay them directly. SurfShark can get extremely Cheap if you use cash rewards with their time to time yearly deal that ends up being $8 for 2-3 years. It is also Trusted and is Safe , They won't sell your data to someone.

In my Opinion I would go with Mullvad for safety, though I do like ProtonVPN.

(I won't add any Evidence of Surf Shark Being trusted because it's usually based off Opinion but from what i've seen from Sources it isn't not popular)
