"Azul was designed by the world famous, award winning game author Michael Riesling. Azul captures the beautiful aesthetics of Moorish art in a contemporary board game. Players compete as artisans decorating the walls of the royal Palace of Dvora. By carefully drafting the correct Quantity and style of tiles, the most clever of artisans plan ahead to maximize the beauty of their work (not to mention their scores!) while ensuring they wasted no supplies in the process."

  • What game is this most similar to?

    • +3

It's pretty unique, but Patchwork and Sagrada share some gameplay elements.

Azul is the #1 abstract game on Boardgamegeek, if that's any indication.

  • I think Azul is pretty good but it’s not exactly high octane stuff.

To me it’s more of a board game for people who like tight strategy games but not great to excite non board gamers.

    • +1

What would be a good option to get non board gamers interested?
I would like to try playing board games with wife and kids, kids are 5 & 11. We are all non-board gamers.

      • +2

I play this with my 6 y.o. and he loves it; it works at multiple different levels, so a novice can play against a game geek and both enjoy it; my partner is not a gamer and she quite enjoys it too.

        • Thanks, seems perfect for us. Ordered.

      • This would be great for non boardgames who are looking to get into them.
Simple rules and fairly quick (30 min ish) but with plenty of depth of strategy.

Others you may way to look at are Catan and Ticket to Ride, or Pandemic if you want to try coop.

        • Thanks, ordered Azul, Pandemic and Ticket to Ride.

  • I'm in. Have been checking this out for a while and can't pass up on this price.

  • +3

FYI.. Some reviews are saying the sold version is not genuine.

    • +19

This seems to be a common issue with Amazon as they merge reviews from multiple sellers (i.e. both Amazon AU/US and marketplace sellers).

This item is being sold by Amazon US - it would be extremely unlikely to be counterfeit.

      • Nvm

  • Anyone know if this i worth getting if i already have Stained Glass of Sintra? I really like it but is there enough of a difference to justify purchasing the original?

    • +1

I've heard they're very different games and the original is much better.

  • Awesome game!

  • +6

Dont forget to use shopback also.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/504986 12% discount

  • Great game!

  • Thanks! Purchased

  • +1

Thanks. It's on my to buy list. Waiting for a good Catan deal :)

  • +3

    There's also a promo on a few games - $16 discount on $82 spend. https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/promotions/details/popup/A2KAC0…

    Azul + Pandemic = $75

    • Does the 12% Shopback cashback stack with this discount as its not an actual code?

    • use this to get Concordia for $67.

    • Thanks for the tip - ordered both.

    • Hmmm it’s not applying when I add both and azul is not in the qualifying items list anymore?

  • +1

    i like saying Azuul

  • +2

Can confirm this is not genuine.

It will still be playable but the quality of the items such as the board are noticeable, if you're okay with that go right ahead.

    • Thanks for the heads up, I was gonna grab a copy. Not paying this much for a non-genuine copy

    • Bugger. Just ordered it. Might cancel it.

    • Did you buy it from the US ? I see Games World are selling it for $70.

        Hey Omblygombly,

Just to provide context here. I started my own online game store company 2-3 months ago and I've been through an entire learning curve with the genre. One of the things that's present is that the really popular (but simple games) are being counterfeited in China and sold for huge discounted prices. There's zero copyright law and enforcement about the issue. Now personally this doesn't really affect my business as my biggest seller is miniature games which would be extremely difficult to counterfeit and noticeable.

But what I hate seeing is people buying something than getting absolutely jipped or annoyed that it's not the real deal. In most realities if you bought this for a family member as an Xmas gift they would not know the difference but if you had a side by side comparison it's glaring.

How do I come to the conclusion is was counterfeit?

        https://prnt.sc/q9p3fs

The other is the cost. The Australian Distributor price per the below SS is $45.50. This is why you see all the AU Online stores + Brick & Mortar stores sell it for more than this. The AU Distributor would never decrease the price unless they needed to desperately move stock but they wouldn't with Azul because it's a hot moving item. They may bring the price down verrry, very narrowly with excessive stock but no where near that they can sell it for $34 with a profit regardless of any special promos.

        https://prnt.sc/q9pblr

An Overseas company would not be getting Azul that much cheaper that it would ridiculously out price local wholesale prices at the customer level.

        • There's a lot of text there but are you saying Amazon are not allowed to sell items at a loss?

        • -1

It was on sale for US$18.99 from the US Amazon.com site, from Amazon as the seller (not a marketplace seller) - whilst I agree there are issues with counterfeit games, these are almost universally from marketplace sellers, not Amazon. Additionally in the unlikely event it isn't genuine, I have no doubt that Amazon would issue a refund.

Sucks for the small guys, but the shopping behemoths can negotiate volume discounts or price as a loss leader.

        • Hmm, thanks for the detailed reply. Think I'll cancel as it is a birthday present for someone.

          • +2

@omblygombly: Not sure if you’ve cancelled. Given the seller was Amazon US. it was likely genuine

        • +1

Just arrived. Can confirm is legit.

          Turns out you were wrong

    • +2

How can you confirm this? I've bought a ton of games from Amazon US (via Amazon AU) lately and they've all been genuine.

As stated above, Amazon have this annoying habit of merging reviews from multiple sellers - so bad reviews from marketplace sellers appear on this listing.

    • +3

I once bought a copy of 7 Wonders, both shipped and sold by Amazon US.

When it arrived, something felt off. The pop-out tokens were blurry, the text on the cards were cut off on the sides, and everything just felt flimsy. After comparing it to a friend's genuine version, I came to the conclusion that what I received was a counterfeit version, reached out to Amazon, and they promptly gave me a refund and told me there was no need to ship the game back.

I was floored that Amazon, as both the seller and shipper, could ship me a counterfeit version. After extensive research, I learned a few things:
      * From time to time, if Amazon has too much stock of a specific item, albeit from Amazon (seller) or marketplace sellers, they will take a punt on quality and consolidate all stock under Amazon (seller).
      * Their marketplace algorithmically drives the price down to try and move stock out of their warehouse.
      * Most of the time, it all pans out and you end up with a genuine item as most sellers are legit. But if you draw the short straw, Amazon will be quick to resolve the issue.

In the case of Azul, I'd say there may be truth to some of the comments in this thread about it not being genuine. But if anyone is interested in the game, I recommend you still go ahead and order it:
      * In the best case, you end up with a genuine version at a great price and all is well.
      * In the worst case, you end up with a dud; lose a bit of time and effort in the process, but ultimately get your money back.

Just don't rely on it for a Christmas present!

      • I agree you on this. Im really surprised that I got negged for providing thorough insite with my background experience.

It's almost like it's not worth providing skepticism.

        • +4

I think the issue is there's a difference between providing skepticism and stating "can confirm this is not genuine".

You aren't really in the position to confirm shit until the product is delivered, eh?

    • In case you are interested, my copy arrived today and is legitimate.

Walmart had it on sale for US$18.99, which probably explains the aggressive pricing: https://www.reddit.com/r/Boardgamedeals/comments/e9e7yf/walm…

I'm digging these board game deals but man I'm struggling to actually receive anything from Amazon, to the point where it's almost not worth the hassle. Their Vic carrier, Fastway, are appalling and the two games I've ordered from them have vanished, and Amazon service exists on a spectrum from being completely disinterested to impotently begging you not to be upset. Total headache so far.

  • Price jumped to $57.91 while I was looking at it and longer eligible for Prime shipping.

    • Out of stock from Amazon US, so it's defaulted to the next marketplace seller

    • +1

Good thing you mentioned this. I was just about to cancel. I won't now. Seems to be genuine.

    • +2

      Back down to $34.19 again.

  • Good for kids?

    • Depends on the kids; I play this with my 6 yo, though he doesn't always get the more strategic elements, but still has fun (you can play novice against expert and both still have fun)

  • Been meaning to add this to my collection. Cheers!

  • thanks, ended up picking up pandemic + azul for about 75

  • It's now showing as $50.92

  • I got mine delivered today but haven't opened it

I inspected the packaging and it looks pretty good box wise

Can anyone confirm they got a genuine copy from this sale?

    • -1

      Yes.
