Kmart: Student Desk $15 (Burwood in VIC; Maybe Elsewhere)

140

Kmart (Burwood in VIC; maybe elsewhere) is clearing out these student desks. I picked one up a few days ago and it's quite nice. I just checked a few hours ago and there are still a handful in stock. Ring ahead to secure yours if you are going.

It may be available at other locations.

It does not seem to be on their online shopping site.

From what I can tell, a similar desk would be at least $30 elsewhere.

Note: the keyboard rest slides very easily. As my keyboard rest is at a slight angle (one screw is too long so it isn't tight) when I roll the desk around, the keyboard rest tends to come out during transportation.

… I can't think of anything else about it.

Oh, you'll need your own phillips head screwdriver for this one.

Update I forget where I saw a load limit for the item, so I've taken out that it could "support 8 kilos in weight"

So far I've had maybe 5 kilos or a bit more, sitting on it with no issues.

Only a dirt poor, malnourished Uni student would be trim enough to use this thing. The old mie goreng 2 minute noodle Uni diet… ahh.. the memories.

    • So good :D

    • I find it's useful to move around the house where a little something would be good. Next to the bed for the notebook or a little DVD player, the tv room as something to put food and drinks on, when I'm building the other furniture (to keep a few tools in handy reach without having to bend down all the time)

      shrug :)

and I'm not a dirt poor student anymore :)

  • These have been at Parra since a more than a month..
There a few other cheap furniture also.. like bed side tables for $10, chair for $15..

Sounds like a deal, but from my experience, I wouldn't trust a Kmart home brand to support my laptop like depicted in that picture though..

    • Wait a second how heavy is your laptop? If the wheels are locked in it would be totally fine. A big desktop setup wouldn't go down too well on a cheap table however.

    • True; you'd probably want to see one assembled or check it out after buying it, before trusting it too far.

I can't say if your standards are the same as mine. I decided, given my home situation etc, my notebook would be safe on the desk and that it would more than adequately hold up.

So far I've had my notebook (3kg), a keyboard, a graphics tablet and a portable DVD player (2.5 kg) sitting on it all at once with no signs of buckling or bending.

But agreed, it's up to each what they decide is acceptable risk, acceptable build quality, etc.

      What was your experience?

I just bought one from Burwood. There are 15 more as of now.

    • :) Oops, I only saw a few on the shelves and assumed that was it :P

  • $10 today at Greensborough K-Mart. Bedside tables now $7 and Bookshelf also now $7.

    • Bookshelf? :)

      • 3 tier 'mini' bookcase.

      • Thanks. I couldn't find the bookshelf :) I did find bedside tables. Price still said $10.

There were also dispenser bottles for hand wash, on sale for $0.50 (1 dispenser and 1 extra base)
Also some cream coloured light weight fleece throws for $2.50 (as well as others for $5. Coles also has $5 ones)

  • About 20 of them on the floor at kmart werribee and the people not even stop and have a look at them.may be the people are sick of cheapie things.i think kmart will be selling them for $10 next week.
