Coffee Roaster (and Subscription) Recommendation

I just missed out on the Five Senses deal and I was feeling depressed looking at by current stash of coffee left at my place.

Are any of you on coffee subscriptions?

I know this is OzBargain and of course I know this isn't the cheapest way to buy coffee but I genuinely enjoy fresh roasted coffee (despite my username!) and I wouldn't mind getting them delivered regularly.

Otherwise, any roaster recommendations?

Personally, I'm currently looking for filter roasted coffee (either blend or single origin) that are pre-ground for Aeropress for the convenience, but I can consider getting a grinder if I need to. I guess if I'm not getting them delivered I need to consider location to pick up - which would be inner west Melbourne.

Any thoughts would be appreciated :)

EDIT: Just came across this one: https://no-bs.com.au/subscription/ Any one tried this before?

  • If you're in Sydney CBD, Kingswood coffee is consistently known to be the best coffee around. Failing that, just pop into regular cafe that serves Campos coffee and grab a couple of fresh bags?

  • Plenty of options available, even specific to Melbourne.

This deal was posted last night but I don't think they do subscriptions:

This deal is expired but you could still sign up for a subscription:

No-one on here knows what your preference is in coffee, and we can only recommend what we like. Keep trying a few different options and find what you like.

    • Yeah fair enough. I'm mainly looking for filter roast recommendations at a reasonable price which seems rarer than espresso roasts.

I have had Pablo & Rusty subscription in the past and few other things here and there to variable success.

      • +1

Again, have a look at melbourneccs.com.au
For example, their 'seasonal spring blend' states:
This blend is a medium roast and versatile for espresso, milk-based brews, batch brew, pour-over, and cold drip.
That seems to be a pretty versatile roast to me.

But if you are focusing on the prices, to arrive at your "variable success" determination, I probably can't help you.

        • Yeah I was having a look through that website just then :) Thanks for the recommendation.

      • I have P&R too, good subscribtition and good coffee for the price.

  • Market Lane subscription is the best I've tried. They source individual growers from around the world, import the beans and roast them in Melbourne. Exceptional quality and great variety to try.

    • Thanks for the recommendation! They look like they have a good variety of filter roasts to try :)

      • I like that you get a photo of the farm / farmer with each batch that comes through as well as a detailed description of the coffee.

  • We buy Byron Bay Coffee Company organic beans, 2 x 1kg = $82 with delivery, in 3 days. Obviously not the cheapest but we like it. My son is a Coffee Roaster in Auckland.

    • Nice :) It's only for myself so it would take a while for me to get through 2kg of coffee unfortunately. I think I probably consume somewhere close to 400-500g a month.

      • It lasts 2 of us about 4-5 weeks.

  • +1

I keep going back to thebeanbay https://beanbay.coffeesnobs.com.au/

Seems to taste the nicest for us. Use with a Breville smart grinder and small Lelit coffee machine.

    • +2

Looks interesting :) I think I need to get a Breville smart grinder and commit to grinding the beans myself - it probably opens up more options to buy more directly from roasters like you suggested!

      • Yeah it was a good investment for us and those grinders come on sale around the $150 mark fairly regularly.

      • That's what we have with the Breville BES820 machine, for 3.5 years now.

      • I've been grinding mine in a nutri bullet. It does the job, not well, but it does the job.

  • OP, have you tried the Aldi beans? They might reach your pass mark at a fraction of the cost.

  • Can recommend Patio Roasters. They deliver and do subscriptions. Some of the best coffee I have tasted.

  • I'm a regular with https://www.mycuppa.com.au . Very good quality fresh coffee and better prices (including postage) than most other online sites I've found.

For example… $25/kilo, and about $7.5-10 postage depending on how quick you want it.

  • My opinion is if you're after fresh coffee beans you need to grind them yourself.

  • I've used NoBS's 500g filter roast (whole bean) option
for about a year and been happy with the price and variety.

My only minor gripe is that my usage sits between the 250g & 500g per month options, and they only ship monthly (usually arrives by 10th in Melbourne). It's super easy to change quantities but I'm sometimes caught out by the lag, or playing catchup with surplus beans (coldbrew, coffee desserts, or home made liqueur all work).

  • Coffee Snobs!!
They roast twice a week, and post same or next day, express mail from Geelong.
It doesn't matter where you are in the country, as its express mail, so mostly next day delivery
You have the choice of whole beans, ground, single or a blend
I have been using them for 12 years now. Highly reccommended
