Scam calls asking if I've ever traded shares?

I've been getting calls lately from people first asking if I've ever traded shared before as according to their records, I have. I've never really been able to understand what they are actually wanting.

Has anyone ever received the same? They've called 4 times now over the past few weeks. Sounds scammy but not sure what their angle is.

  • They might be just trying to sell you some sort of share trading scheme or something.

That's what we call an investment scam.

A scammer claiming to be a stock broker or portfolio manager calls you and offers financial or investments advice. They will claim what they are offering is low-risk and will provide you with quick and high returns, or encourage you to invest in overseas companies. The scammer's offer will sound legitimate and they may have resources to back up their claims. They will be persistent, and may keep calling you back.

I frequently get similar scams on WeChat. Often airbrushed "models" striking up conversation, saying how they're in Australia and work for an investment firm, want to look at shares with me… and off it goes into their investment scam.

  • Yeah it'll be either some trading BS or binary options crap. Block and ignore. Or answer and be abusive. Anything to get off their radar.

Probably took me a year of blocking numbers and abusing people before it stopped for me

Phone calls from unknown numbers should not be answered. They're always scams or something else unwanted.

    • Can confirm I got a good one last week.

Some old guy was offering a 150K job to live rent free in his sanctuary cabins and just report traps going off in the bush.

They then sell the animal fur to be used for God knows what.

Private number and said his daughters were affiliated with the Corby's in Bali or something yeah I noped out of that conversation quickly..I don't think trapping animals for their body parts is looked highly upon in Australia no matter what the salary or bonuses and it sounded like he was connected with the drug cartels.

Probably a prank call but it was interesting in a weekend morning that's for sure.

What we’re going to do is this. First we pitch them Disney, AT&T, IBM, blue chips stocks exclusively. Companies these people know. Once we’ve suckered them in, we unload the dog shit

      At least let him finish

  • I get these all the time, it is bloody annoying. I seem to get it in waves. Nothing for a few weeks to months, then I might get 5 a week. Current record is 3 in a day. Every bloody time I say I can't afford to trade shares, and they still call again.

  • Just tell you are warren buffet

Any unsolicited call is a scam.

  • If they call me I'll just ask them to invest in my new Jesus coin idea and say it would be such a blessing if you could help me kick start it on go fund me lol.

I love phone scammers always entertaining.. that or just let them talk to my grandparents they usually hang up in a few minutes.

  • I don't even pick up my phone anymore until I google the number first, there was one time I was getting daily spam calls, so annoying

  • I just continually ask scammers to give me their full name, DOB and address to confirm their identity before proceeding, until they hang up.

  • I wouldn’t even answer - could be a different more nefarious type of scam (not trying to sell you anything) - but if you don’t know pins/passcodes - often the bank will ask you what type of products you have as a form of identification.

I could be looking too deep into it - essentially say no thanks and hang up - don’t confirm or deny anything

  • say yes and see where the convo leads but dont give out any real info
