Which Bank Will Let You Notate Transactions for Branch Withdrawals

Its unusual so I will explain.

Sometimes I can do better for cash so I want to pay a bill that way.

With Bankwest if I took money out at the Teller, I could say "for TV set" or "Rubbish removal" or "Aldi Shopping Bag"

That helps me later when reconciling my expenses. (Yes I could do this in my finance program but by time I get home etc I can forget)

Now bloody Bankwest closed another local branch so its a long way to travel to the new branch. So I switched

Unfortunately the new bank ANZ doesnt let me do this. In fact its even worse. I transferred funds to my son. As it was over my transfer limit, i had to go to the branch. He is also with ANZ.

So all I get is "card entry" - thats it. Doesnt help me one iota later.

Bankwest is out, so any one know if any other bank has this feature? Even if I can notate it myself later on the internet banking

TIA 🙏

  • Would be helpful if you could list your suburb OR names of banks in your area.

    • Good point - thanks

      NSW

All the 4 majors plus St George, Greater and Newcastle Permanent

Any others are about same distance as Bankwest

Ok, I know for sure that Westpac does NOT offer this feature.

        • Thank you. ANZ and Westpac down 😀

  • Raise your ANZ transfer limit?

    • To Answer your question, thats not the major issue, its the ability to notate cash withdrawals, the secondary issue is that even transfers to another account cant be notated, but in most cases I can do a transfer within the limits (although ANZ is very low) with multiple transactions, not ideal but workable, whereas the cash issue isn't.

It may just be a Bankwest "feature" but something that was handy.

      • Strange as with my ANZ cheque account when I make a transfer I can indeed include details of the payment?

        • You are right unfortunately not for in branch transactions.

          Thanks

Another way to do it is: if you have savings and transaction account, transfer money from savings -> transaction with the proper description in internet banking. Then withdraw the money from the transaction account.

    • Not ideal, but I like your thinking at least thats something better than right now. Hopefully another bank has the feature, if not I'll do this

      • I also take photo of every single receipt I receive.
If I don't remember what the transaction was (usually shop name and statement description are different), I just go to the cloud where the photos were automatically uploaded to, to find the receipt (sorted by date).
If you don't get receipts, just take photo of the item or write it down on a piece of paper then photo.

First world problem LOL the last time I went to the bank was to open an account which was years ago.

        • Agree I guess the real point is its for larger transactions like buying a TV/furniture off gumtree, or paying for the air con install, not for smaller transactions.

However I like your first option a lot as it makes it very clear and I dont leave much cash in the transactions account.

Like paying aircon install $500, transfer exactly same amount to transactions account before leaving home, then take out exact same amount when at ATM or Teller. It also gives me the ATM option for withdrawal rather than the teller.

But I will check out the CBA that vikvance mentions below

          • @RockyRaccoon: Larger transactions are usually easier to remember than all the small ones, especially if they are for significant items you don't buy every day. You could try carrying a smsll notebook and writing down your transaction.

            • @Lastchancetosee: Of course and thats what I am doing now.

But was hoping that the bank might have this feature as Bankwest already does.

  • You can do this with CBA using the cardless cash feature of their app. BUT you can only withdraw at a CBA ATM so it might not help your particular situation.

    • Ok thats a start at least now there are some options 👍

    • Thanks but there is a limit of $500 on cardless withdrawals, so wont work in all cases. However it could be an Ozbargain style negotiating technique.

Sorry cant pay more than $500 as thats all I can annotate on my cardless withdrawal

      Bargain!! 😀

  • What finance program do you use? Does it have a mobile app so you can record the transaction immediately?

    • Moneybrilliant not looked into mobile app, but I like Brokenglish idea if cant get bank direct option.

Will follow up CBA. Guess that leaves only NAB and the minors to check into

  • You might be able to do it with a Credit Union if there are any in your area.

    • Ok I'll look at that, although the CUA branch closed a few months ago after I had just opened an account. I'll look around and see if there are any others and if they can do it. Cheers

  • When you withdraw from a CBA touchscreen atm there is an option to use an on screen keyboard to type a message after you withdraw. Could work in your use case?
