Recommendations for a Dash Cam (Front & Rear) ?

Hey guys,

My car was involved in a hit and run last week and unfortunately I didn't have a dash cam installed.

I've been tossing up between purchasing just a front camera and / or a rear camera as well. My budget would be around the $100-200 range.

I've been closely looking at the Gator 1080p Barrel Dash Cam With WiFi - GHDVR82W or the Navman 1080 FHD Front And Rear Dash Cam With GPS FOCUS400. Anyone have any experience with these? Or any other Dash cameras you recommend? Can I get away with just a front camera installed?

Cheers.

  • Depends on your budget really…. you can spend $70 on a china special from aliexpress. or go a more name brand for $400. Quality and features will differ a lot.

I got the BlackVue 750S and couldn't be happier.

Viofo A129 Duo. Good rating and great reviews. And you're not paying for having "Blackvue" written on it.

  • I'm using an older Blackvue 650S-2CH with front and rear, and got it professionally installed by Bendas (in NSW). Very happy with the outcome but I think cost about $800 all up with the Power Magic Pro as well.

I have two sets of Viofo A129 Duo. They take reasonably good footage in daylight conditions, average at night. The issue with these (which according to forums is common with budget dash cams)is that they don't always come on when you start your car. It has happened several times on both.

  • I've had a few cheapies, the B1W-C, A118C and 2 x A119 and they were all unreliable.
Got a Thinkware F770 2Ch for $330 and have had no issues, even with parked recording in the heat. I would definitely suggest either Blackvue/Thinkware.

    • People seem to recommend the Blueskysea B1W a lot and I was thinking of getting it. Curious why yours was unreliable?

      • Not sure, it could be just localised to the unit I had but I had issues with it starting with my car. Sometimes it would turn on, sometimes it wouldn't. This was one of the first revisions of the B1W-C, so it may have been addressed in later hardware versions.

  • I've been using a Navman MiVue 800 for just over a year now. Cost $210 (Ebay). Hasn't missed a beat & easy to install (even the rear camera).

  • Nearly come a cropper last week using an old Navman MiVue 358 problem with it is films in 3 minute blocks if the the car turns off before the 3 minute block completes that block is unreadable. Dunno if it's the same on the newer ones

    • That's less than ideal because in the case of an accident, a sudden and unavoidable loss of power is very probable… and that's when you would most need the footage.

Most dashcams come with inbuilt battery or capacitor precisely so they can save that footage.

    Viafo

  • I was going to recommend Street Guardian but that's way out of your budget.

I previously had a Vicovation Marcus 5 which is still out of your budget but much cheaper than the Street Guardian. It was rubbish and unreliable. So at least you know which one to stay away from……..

  • Anyone have thoughts on the Blueskysea Mini 0906 as a budget dash camera duo?

  • Does anyone recommend the Xiaomi one?

    • I'll happily recommend it from personal experience. Been going strong for a couple years now including on roadtrips up and down the coast. Have downloaded footage and photos and all legible etc.

Mine is hardwired to the car though so if you're not doing that, YMMV.

  • Any cons for using magic pro for blackvues? Will it be safe just to leave it on? I used to use it but now stopped due to different opinion.

  • Merged from Suggestions for a Good Dual Dash Cam in Price Range of A $150

    Hi Guys,

I am looking for a good "DUAL" dashcam in the range of A$100-A$150. I do not have any idea about these dash cams.

I found NAVMAN miVUE800 which is on sale in JB HI-FI for A$143. Unfortunately, local JB doesn't have stock and even my local Office Works are not happy to price match as the item will not be delivered to my place.

    I appreciate your suggestions?

    Thanks in advance.

    • Oh. Thanks. It is more useful.

  • Merged from Please Suggest a Dashcam for Me

    Hi friends

I've never had a dashcam before in my history of driving, and now I feel I must not push my luck, and have it in case anything happens.

However, with a multitude of options, I'm confused on what to buy. My only conditions are:

    1. Must be from a local physical store (i.e. not from overseas websites and the like)
    2. Within $100 ideally but could go higher if required

What options do I have? How difficult are they to install? Do they always use the cigarette socket? Ideally I'd like one for external footage and one for driver side footage (thinking of driving Uber).

Kindly share your opinions. Thank you.

  • Viofo A129. Dont pay the Blackvue tax.
