Massdrop X Hifiman HE4XX Headphones $130USD (~$190AUD) + Shipping @ Drop

110

I'm not too familiar with these cans but they popped up in an ad and seems like a good price. Previous low on OzB was $145USD (~$212AUD).

Audiophile world is a never-ending rabbit-hole. Be warned - turn back now!

That said, this is a good price to try some Planar Magnetic headphones. Hifiman have a good reputation in this field.

Wasn't sure what Planar Magnetic was so had a google, for anyone else wondering-

Planar magnetic drivers make the headphones that use them extremely resistant to all kinds of electronic and audio distortion, thanks to the evenly-suspended diaphragm material in between permanent magnetic fields. It also gives them extremely fast response times, with little to no transient sound as the audio source stops sending high or low frequencies.

To put it simply, planar magnetic headphones have a very even, precise sound, even without the aid of headphone amplifiers (though some audiophiles will still want to use them). A downside is that the design doesn’t quite have the same “oomph” as a conventional dynamic driver, which can create bigger, wider sound favored by bass enthusiasts. They’re also considerably heavier than standard designs.

      • Yep pretty accurate.. Planar's can sound "boring" for those who are not used to the very precise rendering they give ..

        • I have the 4xx's, they thump pretty hard with an amp and a bit of EQ

          • @harro112: yeh.. a lot of higher end heaphones do benefit from EQ.. which is kind of ironic really.

i think it's more about what we're used to.. coming from cheaper hardware which colours the music a lot.

      • Protip: although planar magnetics are somewhat of an improvement over dynamics, the description above is more of an ideal rather than real world performance. There currently aren't any speaker types that are like what's described above, even electrostats or pure beryllium diaphragmed dynamics. The upcoming GrapheneQ headphones might manage it, if the production version is as good as their early prototype, but that's a big "if".

    • Hifiman have a reputation for cheap cans they pump out via Massdrop with massive QC issues.

Not convinced I'd want to buy them offshore tbh.

    • do they need amping?

        Shot yeah

  • Probably worth mentioning you get a $20 coupon for creating a new account with Drop. You can seemingly use it to apply to this deal too, bringing it down even more. Haven't went through checkout, but it highlighted this deal as being available to use it on.

  • Someone said in the Sennheiser HD 6XX deal Massdrop no longer ships to Australia. Otherwise, this is a very good price

    • addicted to audio sell Drop stuff in Aus..

      • And even then it's only the 6xx and 58x apparently, although I was able to get the 58x.

They should change their name to addicted to money.

Previous low on OzB was $145USD (~$212AUD).

Previous deal was inclusive of shipping so this deal is a similar price with USD $15.25 shipping to Australia.

THey're a good deal. Got them a month ago and been happy with them, tho I will say they need a amp and aren't as comfy as my 58x and 6xx. BadSeedTech on Youtube did a review of these, watch that if you want to know what these are about.
