    Doesn't Aluminium cause Alzheimer's ?

    • +2

      No.. aging cause it

      • have read reports in the past that suggest Aluminium is one factor…

        • +1

have read reports in the past that suggest Aluminium is one factor…

And you have probably also heard that aspartame is dangerous, toxic and many other things.

It is most likely that Aluminum does not cause Alzheimers http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/2004/07/29/1163941.ht…

It is most likely that Aluminum does not cause Alzheimers

that report is 7 yrs old… anything more recent?

        • that report is 7 yrs old… anything more recent?

I could get some academic reports however wont be able to share them for copyright / access restrictions. I knew of the ABC report so it was easy for me to find again.

Just because something is old does not make is wrong or right.

For the last 40 years people have thought that MSG gives you headaches or 'Chinese Restaurant Syndrome' but there is research which has been around for the last 20 years showing there is no link with MSG and Chinese Restaurant Syndrome.

But the average person still thinks MSG gives you a headache.

        • For the last 40 years people have thought that MSG gives you headaches

It does… It is just about the only food that gives me a headache…
I've found that out even without knowing the food contained it… eg. i had Jack's Beef Jerky once and had a headache a few minutes later, only then did i read the ingredients and saw it contained MSG

        • I think for some people who have gluten allergies, MSG is one of many products which can trigger a headach.

I've been using an Aluminum water bottle for the last 5 years and I can't remember it ever causing me to get Alzheimer's…

      • +1

still has great memory it seems

    • Any evidence there may be is contradictory and inconclusive. See the Alzheimer's association media release below.

      http://www.alz.org/news_and_events_alzheimer_news_02-02-2005…

      • Any evidence there may be is contradictory and inconclusive.

so why take the risk ?

I'd prefer stainless steel as per post below…

        • so why take the risk ?

Everything you do is a risk.

If you use antiperspirant deodorant which contains aluminum and other chemicals then depending on what you choose to believe you might get breast cancer.

        • If you use antiperspirant deodorant which contains aluminum

          I don't, i read the label first…

        • Because there's a fundamental difference between badly reported scare stories in the media about how "X causes Y" and double-blind statistically significant peer-reviewed studies.

And because if I didn't remain objective about this kind of thing I'd probably have to go and live in a tent up a mountain somewhere.

  • +1

Stainless steel is a better option. But make sure it doesn't have a BPA coating.

    • There is no need to coat Stainless steel with anything so you should not find any Stainless steel bottles with any form of coating.

BPA is in much more than plastic drink bottles and bottle coatings, all the tinned food you have will also be lined with BPA plastic.

  • These have gone up in price

Last time it was $6.99 for
    2 x Beyond Aluminium Water Bottle - 750ml
    1 x Beyond Aluminium Water Bottle - 1000ml
    1 x Beyond Carry Pack
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/25212
    $2.33 per bottle

Now you get 1 extra 750ml bottle for $3 more
    $2.50 per bottle

ROHO's are the best designed stainless steel water bottle I've ever used, and everything is cleanable.

    • looks interesting but none of those are in AUS. Shipping is killer

      • Agreed, the cheapest I've picked em up for is $20 incl shipping. But they last, and you don't mess around with unscrewing the lid when you need a drink.

        • Had a hunt around and found them cheapest at the Pure Living Store (including postage.) Have picked up two of these. Thanks for the tip, as I've been looking for a good water bottle for a long time :)

        • Awesome, keen to hear if you like em as much as I did :)

  • Still great value. I bought some last time. I'd prefer proper screw-in lids though, the cycling-bottle style tops they come with are a bit annoying as you can't squeeze the bottle.

    • That website has no business making any of the shrieking nonsense claims it does without providing more evidence than it does.

By the way, if you actually bother to read the single journal article that they alude to right at the bottom of the page (here, in case you're interested http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0006899397…) you'll find that it's a single preliminary study conducted on a relatively small sample of only 27 long-tailed mice..

I think I'll wait for a bit more evidence than that, especially when the rest of the medical establishment don't seem to have too much of a problem with aluminium. But of course, that's what 'they' want me to believe. Time to slip my tinfoil hat back on.. wait a minute.. I can't even do THAT now..

      Bad science makes me angry.

That website has no business making any of the shrieking nonsense claims it does without providing more evidence than it does.

links to sources are at the bottom…

        • Four links to "suggested reading" are at the bottom. If you are going to make a bold claim such as "Aluminum is harmful to all life forms" in the second paragraph of your supposedly medically factual article you should probably make sure you individually reference the specific evidence for this and every other claim you make. Much like a Wikipedia article for example.

I'd strongly suggest you take a look at the Sense About Science website, which is a charity which aims to help equip people make sense of the abundance of information available nowadays. Their download on chemical scare stories is particularly relevant: http://www.senseaboutscience.org/data/files/resources/5/Maki…

Note that I'm not bashing you, but people shouldn't be making decisions based on shockingly written websites like this one. As I said, bad science, and by extension, bad science writing makes me angry.

And that's all I have to say on this. This is a bargain website after all.

  • I bought these (x4) before from 1-day as well. Was not happy with the quality and ended up not using any of the bottles. Some say it's normal to have lumpy/badly sprayed inside lining, but I still didn't want to drink out of them.
