Looking to Learn How to Paint Cars

I'd like to know is there a place where I can learn to correctly train and practice to apply paint and clear coat to cars. I know glasurit has a facility but I wouldn't know if they train beginners.

This is totally an appropriate forum for this kind of question.

It's random shit like this that impulsively keeps me checking 'new discussions' in forums

    Youtube

As in learn to do as a career or learn to do as a hobby. If the former, do tafe/apprenticeship, if latter, then YouTube.

    • This!

Yeah, I don't want to be bugged down at tafe or as an apprentice.

      • Oh ok this post makes sense now

Then Youtube and your own car is about your only option.

Better homes & gardens on Friday night's, channel 7 with Johanna Juggs

    • OP wanted practice painting too, not just polishing?

    Wax on, wax off

    • paint the fence
      .

Get an apprenticeship. There's a reason they take 4 years, it's not as simple as it looks. Glasurit would show tradespeople how to best use their products, not train randoms off the street.

apprenticeships are like school systems, useless and only used to exploit young people.

        Ok cool.

        Ok, good luck with that.

There is this thing called the internet. You can use it like the library down the road. You should investigate how it can work for you.

Other than that painting isn’t that hard, it’s all in the preparation work. Start with a spray can and an old body panel (from the wreckers) and work your way up.

    • Maybe this is the wrong place to ask for information

There you go. I suspect anyone here who knows how to paint is either self taught or went and did an apprenticeship.

You obviously don’t want a career out of it so self taught it is. Get stuck into YouTube then experiment. You will either learn of give up because it’s harder than it looks. Like I said, go and buy a bonnet or door from the wreckers. Get a spray can and give it a shot. If it works, get some air spray gear. If it doesn’t, you haven’t lost much.

I learnt mostly by doing after reading a couple of books and getting some tips from mates who had had a go etc. Now we have YouTube etc. If you can’t teach yourself from there, you aren’t suited to DIY. I have learnt heaps of stuff on the internet, but have ability to pick that sort of stuff up with a strong DIY background.

        • Somethings are hard to teach yourself. Painting a car requires a spray booth and expensive paints and frameworks to pain with. It’s not as easy as painting a house. Car paints have different properties that expand and retract compared to house paints as they are exposed to different weather conditions.

Yes and no. Plenty of people put their own cars in driveways and garages with good results. I’ve done it with reasonable results.

It’s not as easy as painting a house.

True, but as mentioned, it’s all in the prep work.

So it sounds like know you a little, but not enough. Get on the internet and get researching. Then you can work out if it is for you or not. A bargain website is not the place to learn.

And repeating: get a wrecker panel and start with some aerosols. - or go get an apprenticeship if you want to master it.

            • @Euphemistic: What do you hope to achieve? Repair some scratches or dents? Or respray a whole car a different colour? Or full custom airbrushing?
