Telstra Excess Data Usage Charges - How to Not Get Charged

Signed up for the jb hi-fi telstra $65 plan recently. Sold the phone to make the plan affordable for me and got the $10/month port in credit so very happy with the cost at present, using this sim in my teenager's phone and plan on doing the same with my phone once my kogan plan runs out.
Before this I have been pre-paid jumping and this is the first plan I have had for some time. What I'm worried about with this plan is the excess data usage charges. I asked on the online chat if it was possible to turn this off (and just run out of data) and the person was quite vague and said things like 'always use wifi where possible' and 'you will be notified of charges by email'.
From a google it seems that there is no way to turn off excess data charges? Has anyone managed?
If not, what is the best way to prevent my child accidentally going over? I know that you can monitor your usage on the app but don't want to have to always be checking.
I know you can set up data warnings on phone but how do these link in with the monthly reset of data? Is there an app that does this better that I should download?
Thanks

  • Some providers allow you to put a cap on extra charges. Might be worth finding out if Telstra do then put a $5/$10 cap and rest easy.

    • I'd prefer not to get any extra charges but at least this would take the stress out of it. Chat person didn't mention this but then chat person was not particularly helpful, think they were trying to avoid saying no

didnt they get rid of excess data charges?

    • Only on selected plans I think

  • They don’t stop extra data charges. I switch to their peace of mind plan since then no extra 10 bucks.

The plan you chose has 40gb of data so it's not too bad - although unfortunate if data capping was also a consideration.
The $65 JB HiFI plan has excess data charged at 1GB for $10.
If you went with an actual Telstra plan then it would be piece of mind which is capped after usage down to 1.5mbps (although I assume the sweetener was the port credit..)

Your best bet will be finding an app to control your data usage although they aren't guaranteed to work.

    • 60gb of data with this JB plan. Any recommendations for data control apps please?

      • Not sure about your phones but my Samsung phones allow me to limit mobile data usage in each cycle to a certain amount. However, there's nothing to stop your daughter to change that setting herself even if such feature is available on her phone.

Android has this baked in, no extra app required and it's very reliable.

    • It doesn’t to JB plans

  • ‘Upgrade’ your plan to the new no lock in ones because you don’t want excess data charges over live chat

  • Android phones have data limiting built in.
Set it ~10% lower than your monthly allowance to allow for network overheads.
If you hit the limit, check the Telstra app to see how much they've registered as used and you can instruct the phone to allow the data to continue to flow if you're comfortable.
