Shipping in from US

How much does it cost to bring in multiple new tech goods purchased in the US to Australia. I intend to use a courier service and am particularly concerned about taxes, courier fees and customs.

Do the courier services take care of the customs and tax requirements? Would there be any random delays for the goods to arrive? Also, could anyone please provide any recommendations for courier services I can use.

I'm for a reccomendation or comparison of these third party couriers, where you get them to buy the item in the US and ship it over here.

  • Not sure if a shipping forwarder is what you're looking for but MyUS has a promotion on here for AMEX card holders (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/48698) which is really good value - and they also do the shopping for you if you want for a small fee.

I signed up for this offer and used it a week ago to ship some electronics I purchased off eBay for which the seller wouldn't ship to Australia.

Everything went really smooth with myUS - had the seller ship it to the myUS warehouse and then forward it to Australia for me. They sent email updates every step of the way and you can even choose to consolidate purchases from various shops to save on shipping cost. I got the package in 2 days and paid about $200 including shipping for something that was going on Australia eBay for ~$350.

AFAIK customs duty only comes into play if your package is greater than $1000.

  • I recently bought 2 book sized barebones computers and the shipping was ~$65 through comgateway
It took over a week after it arrived at their warehouse, for them to notify me that it was ready for shipping, and that was only after I started chasing them. I am still waiting for a shipping confirmation from them (should have been shipped Wed).

Last time I used them they were fairly quick. Shipping from US to here was quicker than crossing 2 states in US

For a more "full service" operation, try priceusa.com.au where they buy it and handle everything

  • I used Shipping Easy (http://www.shippingeasy.com) a few weeks ago to bring in a laptop I had a friend buy for me at BestBuy. Not a freight forwarder like MyUS though, more of a courier comparison and booking service.

Laptop arrived in about 5 days using FedEx (my choice) and customs clearance was no problem.

I've never used MyUS but the general stuff I have read is good. If you have an AMEX that promo right now looks good. But sadly I don't have an AMEX card :-(

    • so u can use shippingeasy to ship stuff from Aus to the US too? and is looks like they pick up too?
