When Amazon Sellers Lie about Being out of Stock

A seller on Amazon AU marketplace called and emailed me that the item I just bought is out of stock and offering me a version worth less or cancellation.

I said no and asked if he was sure they were out of stock.

Seller replied yes they are out of stock and offered higher value version that is still worth less than original version or cancellation.

Then I notice that original item is still listed on marketplace but the price has been increased $400 to more than twice as much.

I pointed this out and seller replied that the item had been discontinued and an even more expensive one is replacing it. But it is the original item that is listed still at the higher price.

Can I do anything to make him honour the purchase? Should I report it somewhere?

Seller has taken down listing with increased price.

Seller cancelled order.

Received email from Amazon that order has been cancelled but your card has not been charged. BUT IT HAS.

    Take refund, move on

    • yes.

It shouldn't. Amazon don't charge until the item gets shipped

      • The refund issue is amazons, not the sellers. Speak with them.

Many sellers will bump the price of an OOS item up exorbitantly to deter buyers & drop off search results, instead of removing & relisting the item which can mean more listing fees.

If they don't have the item, then an (incorrect) listing will not fix their stock levels.

Doesn't necessarily mean they still have the product in stock. Sometimes they increase the price to completely absurd levels to keep the listing going but only to prevent anyone from buying it due to the crazy price as the seller does not have stock at that point of time.

At least they told you right away. It's worse when they string you along.

  • The charge will say 'pending'. Relax mate. Go outside a bit….

  • There's not much you can do. There are no provisions in consumer law requiring someone to sell you something you ordered as that would unfairly burden them to do the impossible and supply you with something they may not have.

If they've charged your card then you should stay on top of that and make sure you receive a refund, but otherwise just move on. If you're not happy about it just don't buy from that merchant again.
